SANNA: Southeast Asians Need Not Apply

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Fri Feb 23, 2007 at 12:11:35 PM EST

"Together we can..."  Nice soundbite, but day by day it's looking like Deval Patrick is not living up to that promise.

The latest exclusionary policy of the Patrick Administration is not appointing any Southeast Asians to his Asian American Commission(Lowell Sun).

Not only are Southeast Asians from Lowell, which has the largest Cambodian population east of the Missisipi River, and the second largest in the Nation, exlcuded but all Southeast Asians.

"I'm concerned that I don't see anyone of the Southeast Asian community on the list. Not from the Vietnamese in Dorchester or Worcester or here in Lowell," said Vong Ros, executive director of the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association in Lowell. "I think that it's great to have an Asian commission to address the issues, but from the list I saw they're not necessarily new arrivals like Southeast Asians and our issues are not the same."

Is this because the Southeast Asian Community in Lowell has traditionally backed Republican candidates, like Chuck McCarthy, Mitt Romney, and Kerry Healey?  If so, we should all be dissapointed in that.

UPDATE:

According to "The Column" in The 2/25/07 Lowell Sunday Sun the Patrick administration may be taking steps to rectify the situation.

An Asian-American commission without representation from any of the state's Southeast Asian communities -- the Vietnamese in Dorchester or Cambodians in Revere, Lynn or Lowell -- is questionable at best.

Word is this oversight could be corrected in days.

Seems like the Patrick Administration is retroactively fixing a lot of problems it has created in it's short 52 days in office.

yes, they are conservative (0.00 / 0)
Being from Lowell, but not Southeast Asian I am close to a few of them. Southeast Asians are very family orientated. Many live close (next door or down the street)if not in the same home with their parents, even after they themselves are married with children. I've been to a wedding with over 500 people in attendance. I knew a family help out their 15 year old daughter who was pregnant have her baby and finish her GED; and 6 years later that girl stop her brother and his girlfriend from obtaining an abortion by showing them pictures over the Internet.

They exchange goods and services amongst themselves several times before going out of the circle. Considering they are coming from political climate of leftist dictatorship, there is just a natural tendency not to trust government or white people for that matter. The attempt to revitalize downtown in Lowell has hints of racism towards southeast asians as all being in gangs. We do have a gang problem, but it is from the breakdown of the strong family ties found within the culture.

Buddhism is much more in line with Catholicism then what hip new age thinkers might believe.

“The family does not exist for society or the state, but society and the state exist for the family.” "People have no problem trying to influence other people's children, but no one wants someone influencing their own."

I grew up in Lowell (0.00 / 0)
I know what you mean Renee.  I grew up in Lowell and lived in Greater Lowell for my first 32 years (I'm close to 34 now).  I know many Cambodian Republicans and have learned a tremendous amount about Cambodian Politics from them.  One of the people that I have had the honor to meet is Sam Rainsy a democrat and liberal both in the traditional sense.
