Former Deval Patrick Communications Director Works for Jeff Beatty

by: republicanvoices

Wed May 21, 2008 at 16:06:28 PM EDT

Jeff Beatty's new communications director appears to be none other than Kahlil Byrd, who was a Patrick administration scheduling official and campaign communications director. Will we at long last hear some answers from the Beatty campaign about two of their campaign staffers, that we know of so far, who are committed Democrats?

While Jim Ogonowski is assembling a team of seasoned GOP professionals, including members of the Romney and Giuliani campaigns, Jeff Beatty seems to be having a hard time attracting that group, and is thus hiring committed liberal Democrats to his staff accordingly.

Is this what we should be expecting from the self-proclaimed conservative in the race?

Summary: Jeff Beatty, Republican Senate Candidate for Massachusetts' Junior Senate seat, has reached a crucial milestone in his campaign, gathering over 10,000 verified signatures only halfway through the certification process. This puts him well above the total needed for ballot access in the 2008 senate race.
WITH OVER 50% OF TOWN SIGNATURES CERTIFIED, SENATE CANDIDATE JEFF BEATTY ACHIEVES CRUCIAL MILESTONE FOR GETTING ON THE BALLOT
With More Waiting to Be Counted, Statewide Efforts Gathered Well Above the 10,000 Signatures Needed for Ballot Access in the 2008 Massachusetts Senate Race
Boston - Jeff Beatty  is reporting that his campaign has reached a crucial milestone of 10,000 certified signatures, assuring his place on the ballot for this fall's US Senate Race in Massachusetts. Senate candidates were required to submit signatures to registrars around the Commonwealth by May 6, with the Secretary of State making the final certifications in early June.

"Our network of supporters around the state worked diligently to meet this goal," said Jeff Beatty, a retired Delta Force officer and former owner of a homeland security advisory company. "Throughout the Commonwealth, people are hungry for someone with relevant experience to finally bring leadership back to the Junior Senate seat in Massachusetts. This process prepared me for the next goals - winning the primary and the tough run toward victory in November."

Throughout this campaign, Beatty has consistently shown strength in grassroots organizing. This same network raised over $1 million from more than 30,000 donors since Beatty created his exploratory committee last year. Now, the goal is to continue to build the team over the next months.

"While others focused on racking up endorsements from the same old politicians, Jeff concentrated on building a network of regular people around the Commonwealth and the country," said campaign director Joe Manzoli. "Jeff instructed us to gather signatures using our volunteers, and this group worked hard for his campaign around the state. This represents the way Jeff will run this campaign and how he will lead in the Senate in 2009."

In the next weeks, Beatty's campaign will travel around the state in the campaign's Victory Van, meeting with voters to offer plans to jump start the Massachusetts economy and solve the country's foreign policy challenges. Beatty is also looking to introduce himself to more voters, building on this growing network of early supporters who believe he will take the Senate seat in November.

"Getting on the ballot is a key step, and you've got to get it right," said Jeff Beatty. "Now, I want to honor this successful early vote by meeting the people where they are around the Commonwealth. They already tell me this is a truly different approach than my Democratic opponent has shown over the years."

What's so bad (4.50 / 2)
So, let me get this straight, we have a Republican candidate who was able to convince a Dem to work for him.... what's the story here?

Ok, granted I am sure that some sort of financial  incentive might be a part of the willingness to cross party lines, but ummm.. isn't that an asset and not a liability to have people from across the aisle wanting to work for you?

It's a tad bit hypocratic for a candidate whose Chief of Staff asserts that he is an orthodox conservative. (0.00 / 0)
And somehow, it's hard for me to believe that someone who worked the press for Patrick would be motivated to join Beatty's staff for anything other than financial incentive. Again, I'm waiting for someone from the campaign to explain why there are two liberal Democrats, who we know of so far, hired by the campaign.

Your argument might work in the case of Ms. Hunsinger, if her "field consulting" entailed collecting signatures. However, in the case of the Communications Director, hired to convey the candidate's points to the press, it's a very different story when a former Patrick official is running the show.

Oops, a typo: I meant hypocritical! Suddenly, I feel like the author of the Human Events story bashing Ogonowski. (0.00 / 0)

"Kahlil has been a key part of the team that has helped to take Deval from zero name recognition to the momentum we all now feel about our grassroots success," said John Walsh, Patrick's campaign manager.

You have a problem with a Democrat doing that for a Republican candidate?

Kahlil's views can now be freely associated with the Beatty campaign, as EaBo pointed out. (2.00 / 1)
And most of Ogonowski's staff have far superior qualifications than Kahlil and Hunsinger, regardless.

[ Parent ]
That's ridiculous. (0.00 / 0)
Jeff's views are his own, and whatever Kahlil believes is his own.

You posted that Jim picked up a former Giuliani person. Color me unimpressed with that pick.

Jeff's got a lot of money to spend... (0.00 / 0)
At this burn rate though, how many Democrats can he hire?

lets see...  If he spent 800,000 bucks already out of a million...  Then by September 16th, I guess he will have spent...  hmmm...  carry the one...  8 billion?

Nice.

EaBo do you really want to go there? (3.00 / 1)
Jim Ogonowski calls for the leadership of President James Carter to ease Middle East tensions, he is pro-choice, he chooses to flash a photo of Republican Tom DeLay in an ad pointing to a broken congress. He didn't choose a Democrat! Rep Jefferson, Pelosi, KERRY, or any Democrat would have been on a REPUBLICAN advertisement.  Also, look at Ogo standing next to Meehan accepting a check for his pet project, the Dracut Land Trust thanks to Ted Kennedy. * Earmarks he condemns in a sit down interview. Beatty is pro-life, stronger on national defense, more capable on terror, solid on immigration and doesn't bypass 400 Democrats to attack a Republican to show how Washington needs fixing

Listen to me on 1420 AM New Bedford from 2-6 PM or over the internet at www.wbsm.com from 2-6 PM. You can also go to my blog at www.kenpittman.com

He didn't call for Jimmy Carter alone. (0.00 / 0)
He said that a group of former United States presidents should work together in diplomacy.  Jimmy Carter is one of those former presidents.  The other ones are dead except for Bubba and H.W.  Bubba and H.W. are already actively involved in diplomacy together; you don't think they should welcome Jimmy Carter under any circumstances?  You make it sound like, "Okay, we'll send Carter in."  That's not what it was.

You can't deny that Congress went to the Devil's turf while Tom DeLay was majority leader.  Sure, the Democrats who are in charge now aren't helping matters, but it started then.  If anything, he should discuss all problems, regardless of who initiated and/or sustained them.

You make a big deal about Jeff Beatty being pro-life.  I'd be hard-pressed to find somebody who isn't pro-life.  I am certain that Jim Ogonowski is pro-life as well.  However, he supports a woman's right to choose. Seriously, life is good.  Nonetheless, we are men (you and I, and most people on this weblog).  We are never going to need a procedure of that nature, and it's none of our business what unrelated women do.  It's their call.  What did Bubba want?  Abortion that was "safe, legal, and rare"?  That seems to be the prudent way to go.

Sorry but... (0.00 / 0)
Invoke the name Jimmy Carter at your own peril. Once again, he bypassed dozens of effective Republicans to praise the record of James Carter who is responsible for presiding during the return of the Ayatollah Khomeini, something that should have been disrupted and now we see the poltical landscape of the Middel east and Northern Africa as a result. Bottom line is that it is increasingly difficult to tell the difference between McGovern, Markey and Ogonowski.

He should attack ALL democrats, especially the ones in the MA delegation!! That'll get him elected here!!!

I say STICK UP FOR TOM DELAY. So what if we lost control of Congress!!

[ Parent ]
A perfect example (2.00 / 1)
Of how moderate Republicans look to please Democrats. Look, you're free to think that way but many of us look to show a stark contrast to them. We fell they are wrongheaded on most things and to offer a candidate that appeals to their kind is something I'm not interested in.  John Kerry and Democrats should be for paying advertisements to remind the voters of Tom DeLay, not an alleged Republican.

If you spin any faster you'll faint. (5.00 / 1)
LOOK AT THE MODERATE LOOK AT THE MODERATE!!!

If you are a Republican who want to get elected in Massachusetts in 2008, you know you are going to have Kerry and the Dems tie you to the CORRUPT REPUBLICAN CONGRESS. When you come out of the box, you have the first opportunity to DEFINE YOURSELF, so that they don't define you first.

This has nothing to do with pleasing Democrats. It has to do with appealing to the majority of voters -- that's how you win.

This is campaigning 101, Ken. The problem you have with it is is doesn't have the required pedigree for you.

[ Parent ]
This isn't that big a deal, but (0.00 / 0)
it seems to me that one of the nagging problems many campaigns have, especially when the going starts to get rough, is LEAKS from their campaigns to the media and the opponent's camp. They can be very damaging -- and so if I were assembling the best campaign staff I could get for the money, I'd want to make sure that my senior staff -- most ESPECIALLY the one who's talking with the media on a daily basis, is someone who I can trust and whóse heart and soul are WITH THE PROGRAM.

And What's your point? (0.00 / 0)

mentioning the fact that a guy who used to work for Deavl is now working for Beatty? Don't good business people hire the most qualified person they can find for a job? He helped get a Democrat elected Govenor for the first time in 16 years and he seems to be qualified for the job. The purpose of this post seems to be to cast some doubt on Beatty's conservative credentials but it only clarifies the motives of the person who posted it. Are you really 100?

do you see the comment above yours, three inches away?

It has nothing to do with "conservative credential" (at least my comment doesn't). Patrick made the statement that you glom onto. I simply suggest (and it isn't my post) that I'd want to make sure that my communications director would take a bullet for my ideological soul, in the foxhole. If yo had a choice, wouldn't you want your message person to absolutely believe in your message? Huh???

People who work in this field are surely professionals, but comparatively few of them cross party lines.

Ask yourself why.

Yr. Obedient Servant, Peter Porcupine, Republican

There are plenty of seasoned GOP activists and professionals in Massachusetts and throughout New England, Peter: (0.00 / 1)
Jim Ogonowski has shown that he can find and interest them in his campaign. Jeff Beatty has been able to tap into only a few    longtime activists like Joe Manzoli, but otherwise has been dependent on liberal Democrats who are obviously more interested in their salary than his message.

[ Parent ]
Who said "soul mate?" (5.00 / 1)
I find it hard to believe that you personally would not care about the personal convictions of the individual who is going to be speaking on your behalf.

I think the essence of the issue is the phrase you use -- "willing to stay bought until the end of the race."

If you didn't have to, would you take that chance?

Wouldn't you ASK those known Republican spokespeople first?

[ Parent ]
Peter (3.50 / 2)
Jeff Beatty's whole campaign in the primary has been "I'm more Republican than you."  That's what has been his guiding statement.

Doesn't it seem odd to you that a person who is touting how much more Republican he is needs to hire Democratic operatives.

Much like you I don't care that he did this, but don't you think it undercuts the central theme of his primary campaign?  That's what arvee is pointing out.  Nothing more, nothing less.
