Is The GOP Still Relevant On Beacon Hill?

by: The Angelic One

Wed Feb 13, 2008 at 13:26:07 PM EST

According to today's Boston Globe (2-13-08), House Speaker Sal DiMasi unveiled his budget proposals which offered, in part, an "olive branch" to Governor Deval Patrick while at the same time soothing business interests whose collective nerves were jangled by Patrick's proposals to tighten up corporate tax loopholes. You can check out the full Globe article here:

http://www.boston.com/news/loc...

What I found interesting in said article was that no mention was made of the minority party's take on DiMasi's budget proposal. Were the Republican leaders in the Legislature contacted by the Globe? If not, why not? If the Globe did in fact contact said leaders, surely they must have offered some comments worth printing. If not, why not? Has the state GOP become so ineffectual that it no longer gets mentioned in the media or  - worse still - it no longer has a say in how the budget gets developed?

Right now, the leadership in the General Court doesn't need the Republicans. (0.00 / 0)
As you know, there are 21 total GOP members in the Legislature.  16 in the House, and five in the Senate.  The first way to get back to that point is to expand the ranks so as to remove the veto-proof majorities in both houses.  That means getting to 54 members in the House, and 14 in the Senate.  Therefore, the Massachusetts GOP needs to find 33 potential House candidates and nine potential Senate candidates, and get them elected. At that point, the Republicans can have a say so that any potential vetoes are sustained.  Easier said than done, obviously, but it seems that this weblog has the purpose of facilitating that organisation.

Actually, (0.00 / 0)
We have 24 members - 19 in the House and 5 in the Senate.

24 , 21 what's (0.00 / 0)
the difference? Irrelevant is still the status for Republicans, and will be the case in THIS state for a long LONG time.

Whoops. (0.00 / 0)
Why did I think there were 16 in the House?  Sorry.  My fault.  Nonetheless, the point is the same. embarrassed

What's embarassing is the fact that it's taken some people THIS LONG to come to the conclusion that the Republican Party in this state is a complete joke.

This party ain't getting to where it needs to be until it starts over and builds from the bottom up again. By bottom-up I mean like starting down in the towns, winning local school committee races, select board races, etc.

I'm so f-ing tired of the perpetual merry go round of idiots who waste their life savings hoping to lose by the least ammount to John Kerry and Ted kennedy. They lack the money. They lack the raw skills. But most of all they lack the infrastructure. Which sitting Republican mayor in massachusetts is goingto lend pieces of his political team to help them beat John Kerry? Which congressman can help raise money for them? Hell, which state reps could do that in any capacity? What town committees could do any sort of valuable work outside of Westfield?

And god dammit what makes people think that Jim Oginowski is somehow going to draw a greater percentage of voters state wide than he did in a district that, by Massachusetts standards is 'more' friendly to Republicans!? I love Jim. I love Jim as a candidate. He's got a bright future, but jesus, this is a guy who could literally WALTZ into a State Senate seat thanks to his strong showing in congress very similar to the way Brian Lees did out in Western MAss in '88 and be a HELL of a lot more effective. If he loses to Kerry, he gets the loser tag permanently draped around his waste. In the end we get another clown to parade out there as a supposedly 'viable' candidate.

A friend of mine asked me what being a Republican in Massachusetts was like and I told him "It's a lot like being a part of the group that fights over the fat chick at the prom". We fight over the girls no normal guy would ever want. In this case, we fight over nominations that mean absolutely nothing because the infrastructure is absolutely non-existent.

Next time someone comes up to you and asks you for a $100 check to run for Senate or congress.. tell them to screw and give it to your local school committee candidate with the R next to his name.

Well said but here,s a little side bar (0.00 / 0)
Ive been reading RMG for 2 months or so here,s what Ive learned !!!!You people have been involved in the GOP much longer than I,Your education level is much high than mine,I have no idea how long or how deep you have been involved local political groups because I dont know any of you but here goes.First local city and town committees no one wants to run because they dont trust the MA GOP, they dont know the MA GOP, good viable republicans wont put there necks out on the line if they dont think that GOP has got there back how do we fix that ? MA GOP needs to get out more LOCAL TALK RADIO you have no idea how many people I speak to dont know who the people are in the MA GOP next PRINT MEDIA every time DEVAL PATRICK opens his mouth the top GOP person needs to put out a press release(this means we in people to help the GOP with this)and this mite P*** you all off but I hate to tell you THERE IS LIFE OUT SIDE THE 128 BELT.Lets talk about BULIDING THE PARTY Ive spoken to over 1200 local Republicans and Independences , on the phone meeting people at D and D ,s and now for the first time in years Linda and I have quite a group. Some people in Fall River are willing to do mailings in there wards with there own money(can,t put a price on that). For the first time we now have people calling Linda and I because of how much work we put into  THE LINCOLN BREAKFAST we put on down here and we plan on having an event every three months(come joint us I have much to learn).Let me speak about POLITICAL CANDIDATES who start at the top, down here the Dems have a lock but for the first time I here Dem,s who are ready to dump KERRY, local bussiness people who are dem,s who on there own are looking toget togeather to suport JEFF BEATTY so this time there mite be an exception to the rule sometimes it all in the packageing.Look Ill close with this there is so much more I could list but I think the GOP is only as good as we make it so if its that SCREWED UP we mite start looking at ourselves
