Worcester Telegram & Gazette: BROWN FOR SENATE!

by: Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie

Sun Jan 10, 2010 at 09:40:21 AM EST

Today, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette endorsed Scott Brown for United States Senate!  Massachusetts third largest newspaper is owned by the New York Times.  In today's Sunday edition they wrote:
Given the serious issues that face our nation, and the deep ideological divides that have riven Congress, we believe that state Sen. Scott Brown is the best choice to reinvigorate Massachusetts' voice on Capitol Hill....

Choosing a senator, even at this time of sharp partisan divides, is ultimately not about ideology or party. As important as the health-care reform debate is, the decision before voters on Jan. 19 is not simply about adding a critical 60th vote in favor of a given bill, or adding a critical 41st vote against that bill. Nor is it a matter of making history by electing a candidate on the basis of gender. The time for such "historic" firsts is passing. Above all, voters a week from Tuesday should set aside all talk of what the late Sen. Ted Kennedy or his family would have wanted. The United States is a representative democracy. Positions of power are not to be "owned" by any political party, and cannot be inherited or handed down as if this were a medieval kingdom.

This election is about which candidate is best able to articulate and promote plans for sustainable economic growth, a vigorous national defense, and a limited government able and willing to remind its own members and the American people of the enduring value of our founding principles.

MORE BELOW THE FOLD....

Scott Brown has also received the endorsement of the (Lawrence) Eagle-Tribune!

As I made the rounds yesterday I visited with someone who is so apolitical that she hasnt voted since around 1984 ... and I was surprised that on mention of politics, her response wasnt the typical howl but rather was "wouldnt it be so cool if Brown won". I didnt even have to mention the name.
It appears that even the unmotivated are getting energized this time around.

It's the New York Times-owned WT&G that writes (0.00 / 0)
"We have been disappointed to date in the tenor of the general election campaign between Mr. Brown and his Democratic opponent, Attorney General Martha Coakley, because it has not yet provided the public with the kind of in-depth, free-wheeling, head-to-head exchanges that would offer voters a clear vision of the differences between the candidates. In part, that is the result of Ms. Coakley's reluctance to engage in one-on-one debates with Mr. Brown."

"Work is the essence of Man."

Since the Glob is part of the same ownership package, I can hardly WAIT for that endorsement! >:~) (0.00 / 0)
Seriosuly, Karl - I've had a 4 year professional relationship with a newspaper owned by an out-of-state media group and truly - no input on endorsements in the last two cycles.  The ownership of a paper is really not a factor, while the editorial board is.  And they reflect local attitudes.  Worcester is the epicenter of the Reagan Democrat.

IMHO, such owners would not care if papers printed nothing but horoscopes if the ad revenue was constant.

Standard-Times (5.00 / 1)
I'm breathlessly awaiting the endorsement decision of the Standard-Times of New Bedford.

Oh, wait... one of their editors told me, before the primary, that essentially we all know that the winner of the primary is the winner of the general election so it is what it is.

This is the same paper that, after barely acknowledging Brown/Robinson (and another editor telling me that if this person had to picked that they'd probably have gone for Robinson) did a statement of non-endorsement once the brouhaha commenced over the oversight.

Yeah, if that endorsement comes out to be anything less than 110% Martha Coakley then I may have to do backflips & cartwheels.

To be fair (0.00 / 0)
I should note that one of the aforementioned editors DID publish 2 out of my 3 pro-Brown letters to the editor (one in October & one in late December).  Said editor also did publish a pro-letter in today's paper from a New Bedford Republican.

The editorial board's official position... I'm not so optimistic.

Predictions (0.00 / 0)
Brown:
Worcester T & G
Eagle-Tribune (Lawrence)
Boston Herald
Lowell Sun
Cape Cod Times

That would give him 5 of the top 10 newspapers in the state.

They've endorsed Republicans in the Past.

They endorsed Rick Barton over Tierney in 2006 in the 6th CD race.

They like me, they really, really like me!

Eagle Tribune Endorses Scott Brown (0.00 / 0)
Fresh from this mornings pages:

On Jan. 19, Massachusetts voters have the opportunity to force some real change on Capitol Hill - change that will shake the political status quo in this state and the nation to its foundation.

Mike - been thinking about this - Probably comes out tomorrow, but I bet CC Times endorses Coakley as they are crazed supporters of ObamaCare. (0.00 / 0)

Barnstable county was in Brown's wheel-house of support?

Never so glad to be wrong! (0.00 / 0)
The Times DID endorse him - said he wrong on health care, cap and trade, etc. but STILL better than Martha even though they disagree with him on issues!

Barnstable County is indeed a base of voters for him - the NEWSPAPER is still very liberal.

Yes it is (0.00 / 0)
But I thought they would endorse Brown for a few reasons

1) Coakley was angering newspaper editors for being arrogant and unavailable to them.  Brown has been very available.

2) Scott Brown is going to clean up on the Cape.  Newspapers are still businesses and they know their readers.

3) Cape Wind:  Scott opposes it, Martha supports it.  This may be the only issue I'm with Coakley on, but it's one of those "not in my backyard" local issues.

4) I've been reading some of the stuff from the paper online.  I had a gut feeling.

Regarding a Glob[e] endorsement... (5.00 / 1)
I can only go on what I currently know for sure. The Globe HAS endorsed Scott for US Senate. The Globe HAS NOT endorsed Martha.

Since I do not actually subscribe to the Glob[e], I will just have to proceed with what I know about the two candidates that they like, only one of which is currently in the race, to guide my voting decision.

I'm inclined to agree (0.00 / 0)
Or as Nomad put it so aptly "A walk is as good as a hit".
Thus far...the silence is rather loud.

The closest they've come to saying anything is publishing an outdated poll that is being poo-poo'd in light of Rasmussen and the PPP polls.

The Boston Globe continues to supply the masses with lining for the parrots cage.
