Reaction to Tisei Pick

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Mon Nov 23, 2009 at 13:01:16 PM EST

(We're adding to this as they come in.   - promoted by Garrett)

I will be posting reaction to the Richard Tisei pick throughout the day by people inside and outside the Republican Party.

Brad Jones just released the following statement:

I have known and worked with Richard for more than two decades and it has been a privilege to call him my friend and my colleague.  Senator Tisei brings a wealth of legislative experience and accomplishments to the ticket and as the people of his district will attest he has been a dedicated and honorable legislator who always puts the interests of his constituents first.  As Lieutenant Governor, he will put the needs of Massachusetts' taxpayers ahead of politics, like he's always done in the past.

Additionally, Richard's a small business owner and is probably one of the few state wide candidates who truly understand how difficult it is to run a business in the Commonwealth.  I will do everything I can to support the Charlie Baker-Richard Tisei ticket.

-Brad Jones

More below the fold, including a statement from Kris Mineau

Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno :: Reaction to Tisei Pick
Kris Mineau of the Massachusetts Family Institute:

I am disappointed that Charlie Baker, a serious contender for governor, would choose someone who has repeatedly voted to deny the people a right to vote on the definition of marriage.  Sen. Tisei has consistently voted with the gay special interest groups, including voting to the kill the Marriage Amendment twice in 2007, as well as cosponsoring the flawed 'bathroom bill' this session.

MFI is a non-partisan, non-political organization and therefore will not be making endorsements of any candidates running for office. However, we will continue our practice of compiling voter guides on the important races, highlighting each candidates stance on a number of issues. This includes the issue of same-sex marriage, and includes the lieutenant governor race.

Furthermore, Massachusetts law dictates that there will be a primary election for lieutenant governor, and though Mr. Baker has made his preference clear, the voters in the Republican primary will make the ultimate decision next September.

Personally, I am hopeful that individuals that hold traditional family values will choose to run for both governor and lieutenant governor in Massachusetts. The election of a pro-marriage, pro-life, pro-family gubernatorial candidate in both New Jersey and Virginia this month dispels the myth that a conservative with traditional family values cannot win in a liberal or Democrat-leaning state.

Aaron Margolis at Hub Politics had the following to say:

'm curious why Baker made this announcement now, instead of say, in late January or February. Baker has been trailing in the polls versus Christy Mihos since day one, and to make such an important announcement the week of Thanksgiving seems poorly timed. Baker may have been much better suited to have waited until after the US Senate Special Election. This would have accomplished two things.

First, that election would be over and done with. Right now, the special election is hot to trot, and the election is virtually around the corner; the gubernatorial contest isn't for another 11+ months. What would the harm of been to wait two more months?

Second, of course, is knowing whether or not Scott Brown would be available as a running mate, should he even want it. Picking Brown, who would have just completed a fast-paced state wide campaign, would offer the campaign someone with some state-wide name recognition; I don't think Tisei can offer that. There is a reason why Mihos is ahead of Baker in every poll...and it's not because Mihos is a favorite of the MassGOP establishment. Brown has also stated he is not seeking reelection in the state senate*; Tisei, the Senate Minority Leader, has served in the state senate for 25 years and is (still) up for reelection next year. If Baker-Tisei wins, that could lead to another lost Republican seat in the state senate. Why give up a seat in the senate held by a Republican for 25 years?

*Sources close to Scott Brown say this is not true.

Statement from Dr. Jesse Ehrenfeld, Log Cabin Republicans Boston Chapter Leader:

"Log Cabin Republicans is happy to hear that Charlie Baker has selected state Senator Richard Tisei as his running mate in the upcoming gubernatorial election. This is not the first time Massachusetts has seen an openly-gay Republican run for this office, but we are proud to present a candidate with such a distinguished career in public service with deep roots in his community and a commitment to advance economic prosperity in our state."

So when's Brad moving (0.00 / 0)
to Reading, just a few miles down Rt 28, so he can run for Richard's senate seat?

Karl (TLC)Weld

Ok Brad. How about you then, please clarify this move: (0.00 / 0)
During the recent debate about funding the long term care options for elders, which was funded in Julys' budget, why did you put forth an ammendment that would force the elderly into managed heath care or HMO'S, Thereby taking away their educationtional process about transition care and housing options ?
Then, under immense pressure, had to withdraw that ammendment ? We are paying attention !
Who has an interest in HMO'S, Hmmmmmmm, let me think here ???
Self interest ahead of Constituents interests, Brad ?? How about a copy of that ammendment so we can see it !

We see how it works on Beacon Hill and in this party and we are sick of it.

(I must have missed Eabo's email asking for my reaction)

Picking Tisei is a general election strategy, indicating that Baker's strong fundraising has emboldened him to ignore the explosive mixture of Mihos and the party's right flank.  Probably a safe bet because Mihos' pro-choice/gay marriage stand will make the right, well, standoffiish.

But maybe Baker/Mihos' differences on the sales tax rollback (to 3 percent--I think Mihos is in favor) will unite the right with Christy.  If so, to paraphrase Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman"...big mistake, BIG MISTAKE.

Put marraige aside (0.00 / 0)
Most conservatives don't like the Tisei pick for many other reasons.

For example, among all Massachusetts Republicans in the House and Senate he has received the HIGHEST rating from the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the LOWEST rating from Citizens for Limited Taxation.  He even opposed the income tax rollback.

If Baker wants to run a campaign on lower taxes and controlled spending this Tisei pick doesn't measure up.

Re: Aaron's comment... (5.00 / 1)
...what is so hard about understanding why this announcement was made now and not in late Jan/Feb...

This way all the Baker contributors (in theory) can give Tisei $500 this year and another $500 in January.  I wouldn't be surprised if Tisei racks in $250,000 (or more) between now and the end of the year, which can then be matched again in '10.  If I'm wrong, it's a lost opportunity on Baker's part.

Exactly (0.00 / 0)
Having a running mate now effectively jumps his donation limits from $500 to $1,000 in a calendar year.  If he doesn't do this now those donations are gone forever.

Tell Corzine in N.J. it's all about money. I think he has a slightly different opinion right about now ! $25 million of them. (0.00 / 0)

He probably spent more than $100 million (0.00 / 0)
Running successfully for US Senate and Gov, so I think he understands about money in politics.

Declining Marginal Utility (0.00 / 0)
With money in politics the larger issue is one candidate not having enough money to be competitive rather than the other candidate having too much.  At such low contribution limits, doubling from $500 to $1,000 is huge.  To be able to take your message effectively to the apolitical masses you need resources.

At the other end of the spectrum, spending $50 million vs $100 million for Governor has much less of an impact.  At this level people have already seen the mailings, TV ads, phone calls and so on.  It still helps, but there is a saturation point.

People like to say there is too much money in politics.  For most races here in Massachusetts there is too little.

Tisei Comment on Romney (0.00 / 0)

DD4RP: Your tagline is "Gov. Romney was a disaster we're all still trying to recover from - Sen. Richard Tisei"

When did he say this and under what circumstances?  That is certainly a violation of the Gipper's 11th commandment.

"[Weld, Cellucci and Swift] were all very friendly and understood the need to bring diverse voices into the party. I'd say Gov. Romney was a disaster we're all still trying to recover from, and I would hope the leadership of the party going forward, both with our new chair and with our gubernatorial candidate in the next election would be more in the tradition of Weld and Cellucci," said Tisei.

Local press coverage of Tisei pick (5.00 / 1)
Wicked Local has a good piece on the appointment some of it better than the Boston Globe template that follows social issues.
Tisei has previously drawn parallels between Baker's campaign and Weld's campaign in 1990. Baker's selection of Tisei, who was Weld's campaign chairman 19 years ago, is another parallel: Weld, who had no legislative experience having served as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Justice Department, tapped then Sen. Paul Cellucci as his running mate, based in part on Cellucci's eight-year tenure in the House and six years in the Senate prior to joining Weld's campaign.

On Monday, Tisei said that the last few Massachusetts governors - "In particular this governor [Deval Patrick] - have not had productive working relationships with the Legislature. In Patrick's case, added, "[this] surprised a lot of people."

"I'm going to do everything I can help to Charlie win, but [the lieutenant governor candidacy] is more about helping him govern the state when he is elected. It's not going to be easy."

Tisei will continue to serve as the senator for his district and as Senate Minority leader, and is also up for re-election next year.

"It was a tough decision to leave the seat, because I love doing what I'm doing right now," he said. "People have placed so much confidence in me over the years. I think I can do more for the district and the state as the lieutenant governor. For me, it was the right time."

Thank you for posting this... (0.00 / 0)
I think this is a winning ticket because the political dynamics mirror the race between Silber/Claprood and Weld/Cellucci.

[ Parent ]
You may be right... (0.00 / 0)
..that this ticket mirrors the Weld/Cellucci ticket. But I don't think it's going to work for the Baker campaign to keep using this as a reason why they will be successful. Voters under the age of 35 are too young to remember these supposed "good old days" and the younger voters need to be captured here. Deval Patrick has a major leg up on us on that front. If we're telling younger voters to vote Republican because it's like going back in time, I'm not sure we're going to get them to run to the polls...

[ Parent ]
We dont need "younger" voters to win (0.00 / 0)
Whatever that means...define younger voters for me. Do you mean young as in 18-25? Because if you do then forget about them because THEY DONT VOTE!!! We would be better served by reaching out to disaffected unenrolled voters who will vote for our ticket for a reason. Its all about ISUES ISSUES ISSUES that are meaningful to a demographic that is large. The 18-25 demo is SHRINKING in Massachusetts, moreover they are not as concerned with pocketbook issues as are thirty and fourty something suburbanites with families who get motivated to vote when they think they will be either negatively affected by the outcome or better represented.

[ Parent ]
You are all forgetting one thing- back then, the party was strong thanks to efforts of Ray Shamie and others.. (5.00 / 1)
Since then, it has been a downward spiral. The troop ranks are thin as compared to 1990. Big difference in the current make up of the party too.
