Mihos Leads, Baker Trails: Latest Rasmussen Poll on Gubernatorial Race

by: BNCordeiro

Mon Aug 24, 2009 at 13:16:06 PM EDT

( - promoted by DD4RP)

This has to be great news for Christy Mihos.  Charlie Baker was behind Patrick 40-39.  Sounds like a lot of name recognition at play here among the MassGOP candidates.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Christy Mihos, who held a 41-40 lead over Gov. Deval Patrick in June poll, leads Patrick 40-35 in the latest Rasmussen Reports survey of Bay State voters.

Ouch, down by 1%!  By the MerrimackMan rule we should all give up hope for Charle Baker.  Baker will definitely lose and Mihos will definitely win.  After all, this is a poll over 14 months out within the margin of error!

I of course disagree.  I think you should still support the candidate of your choice.

Plenty of time but eventually pick a candidate & work hard for 'em (5.00 / 1)
Polls at this point are relying tremendously upon name recognition & the feelings towards Patrick rather than support for or against any particular other candidate.

Congratulations to Christy Mihos for his success in this poll.  Surely that must put some wind into his sails.  Christy started off with advantages of name ID & funds. Christy's message may very well resident with the average, salt of the earth, hard working middle class GOP voter.

As far as Charlie Baker, it shows that he needs to continue making the rounds to the city & town committee meetings & political events of all stripes.  Charlie probably has the insider support (endorsements of all but 1 GOP state legislator) but he's going to have to appeal to the Joe Six-Pack Republican activist.  I'd revamp the website, ASAP, and keep up with the Facebook & Twitter updates.  Baker has to be relevant to the blue collar GOP as it appears that he has the blue bloods locked up at this early stage.

Gerry Dembrowski?  He's got a mountain to climb but he seems pugnacious enough to keep on fighting the good fight for his candidacy despite a near total media black out.

I haven't decided upon a candidate just yet.  However, when I do I plan on working my tail off for that person.  The polls aren't meaningless just yet but I don't believe that we should be a poll driven people.  I prefer principles over polls.  I'll eventually decide upon a candidate in accordance with prudent wisdom & my personal conscience.

I hope others will do the same, eventually become engaged, and work like crazy for your preferred candidate.

While we're at it, if you have a legislative candidate or even lower down the ballot... don't forget get excited & involved in those campaigns as well!!!

Christy Mihos and the pathway to victory (0.00 / 0)
I agree, the difference between the two candidates at this point in time is largely due to name ID.  I believe that Charlie Baker will win the Primary.

There is a way for Christy to win.  If the voters few him as both more conservative and more electable that is crushing combination in a Republican primary.  Polling and the ability to self finance currently show him as more electable.  Charlie Baker is connected to Bill Weld and has already taken some liberal social positions on issues.  It's not about Christy actually being more electable and more conservative, it's about the voters believing he is more electable and more conservative than Baker.  That's how he can win.

Baker has to keep doing what he's doing.  He has to go to events and let people get to know him.  He comes across as very friendly and likable.  The worst thing he can do is be the Rombot2010.  Huckabee beat him in Iowa specifically because Huck had that average guy likability.

The first and largest hurdle Dembrowski he in convincing people he is a legitimate candidate.  Before people vote for him they need to first consider voting for him.

Mihos surge is earned (0.00 / 0)
I was recently at the Brockton baseball game and was completely overwhelmed at the superior organizational skills of the Mihos campaign when compared to those of the Baker camp.  While Mihos was accompanied by a huge brigade of supporters, Charlie Baker seemed...well...like the big time corporate executive who just realized that this campaigning thing isn't so easy afterall.

For Christy, it's easy because he just seems to have a more natural, and sincere way with people.  He's the real deal, and I think people in the party are focusing on his issues and finding  that he is the better candidate for November 2010.

For example, as Republicans, we know how important the second amendment is.  C.B. has made it clear he's a gun control guy (read - sarah brady type) where as Christy's web page says he supports the Castle Doctrine, which gives you the right to protect you and your family from attack in your own home.

And the last time I checked, it was Charlie Baker who supported raising tolls, where as Mihos has much more solid and established credentials as a true, fiscal conservative.

On issues, Christy is winning.  And on field organization, he seems way ahead.  The poll confirms what's happening in the race and Charlie may find this wasn't the cake walk he thought it would be.

The Issues (5.00 / 1)
I won't do this on every issue but here's my gut reaction to skimming over a few of Christy Mihos's policy position section of his website www.Christy2010.com.

Considering that earlier this evening I renewed my annual GOAL membership (Gun Owners Action League, for those who aren't into exercising their 2nd Amendment rights) I'd say that such things as the "castle doctrine" are rather important to me & the 500 or so members of my gun club.

Christy's full statement is:

Second Amendment Rights
Christy supports clarifying the state's existing gun control laws and is a firm believer in Second Amendment rights.
Christy supports the Castle Doctrine, which designates one's home as a place where he or she enjoys certain protections. If one is attacked in his or her own home, he or she may stand ground against an assailant without fear of reprisal.

Christy is going to have a problem with many conservatives on:

Women's Rights
Christy supports a woman's right to choose.
Christy also believes in the rights of parents to be notified in cases when their children under the age of 18 seek abortion.

That said, it doesn't appear that Charlie will be on the Right side of that issue.  Charlie is also going to have a problem on the entire gay marriage issue on the Right.  However, Christy may have the same problems so it's a wash.

I also would disagree with Christy on:

Public Health
Christy supports legislation permitting the over-the-counter sale of needles to curb the spread of disease.

I'm with Christy on:

Motorist Rights
Christy is not in favor of the "primary offense" seat belt law, which empowers law enforcement officials to stop motorists for no reason other than failure to comply with seat belt laws.

Christy opposes laws that mandate helmet use by motorcyclists.

I don't ride a motorcycle and I do buckle up but these issues shouldn't be regulated by government regulation.  Rather, they should be up to the individual & their common sense, imho.

I couldn't agree with Christy more on:

Illegal Immigration
Christy supports penalties for businesses that hire illegal immigrants.

Christy does not support taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants.

Christy does not support the issuance of driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

Environment
Christy favors renewable energy research and implementation.

Christy is not in favor of the current proposals to build wind farms in Nantucket Sound and Buzzards Bay.

Christy supports additional investment in mass transit systems.

Considering I'm the chairman of the Energy & Environment working group for the 2010 MassGOP Platform I am interested in environmental issues.  I don't know all the details but I'm surprised that someone who favors renewable energy would be against wind farms in Buzzards Bay or Nantucket Sound.  Again, I reserve judgement out of a lack of information but I live on Buzzards Bay & I'm fine with it.

Gambling
Christy supports slot machines at Massachusetts' racetracks.

Christy does not support casinos in Massachusetts.

We know my libertarian leaning thoughts on this issue.

Neither Christy Mihos nor Charlie Baker is going to run as the new Mr. Conservative of the New Millennia.  That said, those on the Right like myself are going to have to follow the dictates of our own informed conscience and consider a multitude of variables.

My only problem, right now, is that I can't do a similar skimming over Charlie Baker's website, www.CharlieBaker2010.com http://www.charliebaker2010.com].  That's my biggest gripe right now with his campaign.  I don't care about his logo.  I don't really mind if the website isn't slick & fancy.  Simply put, I want info & issues!

That said, some have told me that they prefer Gerry Dembrowski's website of all three www.GerryDembrowski.com

Mostly but not entirely (0.00 / 0)
Festus, you are mostly correct in that Massachusetts has largely embraced the so-called "Castle Doctrine."  That said, there is missing ingredient when compared to Florida.

The difference between the Bay State & Sunshine State is that in Florida neither the criminal - if injured - nor his family - if killed - can sue for any damages.

According to GunLaws.com, the Florida Castle Doctrine:

One: It establishes, in law, the presumption that a criminal who forcibly enters or intrudes into your home or occupied vehicle is there to cause death or great bodily harm, therefore a person may use any manner of force, including deadly force, against that person.

Two: It removes the "duty to retreat" if you are attacked in any place you have a right to be. You no longer have to turn your back on a criminal and try to run when attacked. Instead, you may stand your ground and fight back, meeting force with force, including deadly force, if you reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm to yourself or others. [This is an American right repeatedly recognized in Supreme Court gun cases.]

Three: It provides that persons using force authorized by law shall not be prosecuted for using such force.

It also prohibits criminals and their families from suing victims for injuring or killing the criminals who have attacked them.

Seems clear enough.  When people put issue positions on their websites they don't have to be changes.

So, when Dems put on their website that that they support Roe is that also "trying to create a wedge that doesn't exist?"

When Republicans pledge not to raise taxes is that "trying to create a wedge that doesn't exist?"

People are allowed to support the status quo.

Abortion, taxes and even guns are front and center issues... (0.00 / 0)
...but the Castle Doctrine is a sub issue, much like the auto excise tax would be for the over all tax issue.  It's either "weird" that he features it on his website or he has something up his sleeve.  (Although I will admitt that guns are not a big hot button for me, so maybe their is some "code" he's talking about and I don't ahve the secret hand shake to understand.)

Educate me:  Is there talk of repealing the Castle Doctrine or a push to strengthen it to "Stand and Shot" that I'm not aware of?

[ Parent ]
Not Sure (0.00 / 0)
However, the "Castle Doctrine" was considered a large enough issue in 2006 to be discussed during the debates.

Wow I have a rule named after me! (4.50 / 2)
Looks like I pissed off the Paulians though. Sorry Folks!

I'll just say this. Rand Paul is not done in Kentucky, far from it. Like Trey Grayson, he can win that race. Is he in the same shape in KY as Trey Grayson? No. Right now, and I personally expect for the rest of the that campaign, Trey Grayson will poll better than Rand Paul. There are reasons why I think this is the case, which are not exclusively because I saw Grayson is ahead in the polls. For one, Grayson is the Incumbent Secretary of State, giving him much needed statewide recognition. Secondly, Grayson has done a excellent job at SOS and won 2-1 despite a Democratic landslide on the top of the ticket in 2007. Third, Grayson is a Conservative and will appeal to the Conservative Kentucky base.
Rand Paul on the other hand has some national name recognition from his father, but not much in the way of networking in the state of Kentucky. However, Paul will have lots of money and determined activists and will definitely keep the race competitive. And while he is Conservative, he has no political record to run on, which can be a good or bad thing. Who knows, I can certainly be wrong...

I think the scenario in Massachusetts is a little different though. While Baker and Paul are behind likely due to lack of name recognition, and while both still can certainly win though too, I think there is an important distinction. Unlike Grayson, Mihos doesn't bring a resume of statewide experience, and more importantly, statewide electoral success. He really has no advantage over Baker, other than that he has a different personality and touch, which can and will appeal to different folks more than others. Mihos is probably polling higher than Baker at the moment, for the pure reason, he has higher recognition from his 2006 campaign. At this point, people are probably saying they back Mihos and Baker because they are not Deval Patrick. Naturally, I think for many people, until they know Patrick's opponent, they will hesitate to state their intention of voting againt Patrick.

And on a side note, this poll sucks because until Cahill says he's out, he is definetly a major factor in this race.

As entertaining as polls can be, how much stock can be place in them at this point?  What's next a Palin/Romney poll for 2012?  Polling data isn't worth much until we're a couple months out.  Lots of time for missteps, clarifications, back-peddling, flip-flops and mudslinging between now and then.  Can't wait to actually vote in a primary!

Boston Herald Correction? (0.00 / 0)
Yesterday, the Boston Herald reported that Charlie Baker was 1% below Patrick in this poll.  However in today's paper they're reporting that Charlie was 1% ahead of Patrick.  Which one is it?!

Today:

The latest Rasmussen poll shows another Republican candidate, Charlie Baker, beating Patrick by 1 point.

http://www.bostonherald.com/ne...

Yesterday:

The poll showed Patrick leading Republican candidate Charlie Baker 40-39. Rasmussen later today will release new numbers on what Massachusetts voters think of their state health care reform plan.

http://www.bostonherald.com/ne...

Also intoday's Boston Herald:

The poll of 500 likely voters also found that only 39 percent approved of Patrick's performance, and he came in last on a list of four other politicians listed as most respected by voters. The list also included former Gov. Mitt Romney and U.S. Sens. Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry.

Finally, the Christy's lead over Patrick being 5% was slightly outside of the 4.5% margin of error.

Christy Mihos shall now be known as Don Quixote. His campaign is an exercise in vanity and futility.

Does anybody really think he will be able to govern effectively on Beacon Hill?? Seriously ... think about. How would Christy have done if he was squaring up against DiMasi or Travaligni?? All they'd need to do is buy Christy a canoli in the North End and he'd be puppy poop for the next four years.

Baker is it. Baker IS governor material. We all know it.

I'm not sure if you met Charlie previously but my first time meeting him was Friday at the Dartmouth GOP BBQ.  Maybe I wasn't as observant as you as I was running around crazy but I had the opposite impression.  I thought that Charlie worked the crowd fairly well and was comfortable addressing the audience.

I can't attest to Christy Mihos as he was unable to attend.  However, I think Gerry Dembrowski did far better than many expectations.  Granted, his threshold might have been rather low but I heard nothing but compliments about him coming out of the BBQ.

Hi, Red Mass Group? It's me, reality. (0.00 / 0)
Why do I have the feeling that in 2002 when Mitt swung back into the Bay State, all the Mass GOP rumpswabs tripped over each other trying to kiss Mitt's Morman buttocks?

Yet, here in 2009, when we have a near carbon copy of Mitt - Version 2002, everyone wants to treat the GOP primary as if its a difficult decision between Baker or Mihos?

Romney ran in 2002 as a moderate, business focused Republican.

Baker is doing the same for 2010. Why are some of you acting so skeptical?

You may be right (0.00 / 0)
But Baker needs to improve his website.

When Weld was first elected Gov I was only nine years old at the time. I don't think i was into politics then to remember who Baker was. I would like to do some research first. That's all.

Baker appears to have good credentials in the budget/finance and other areas as I have mentioned in previous posts.

The campaign just began its way too early to me to decide on any candidate for now.

STOP EATING OUR OWN!!! (0.00 / 0)
When will we Republicans stop eating our own?  In deed - we have two very viable and ELECTABLE Republican candidates for Governor in Christy Mihos and Charlie Baker.  I have had the good fortune to have met them both and they BOTH would make inspiring leaders for the Commonwealth.

The very good news that comes out of the most recent poll is that BOTH MEN are making strides against an incumbent Democrat Governor in the bluest-of-the blue states, Massachusetts.

Eventually, either Christy or Charlie will emerge as our candidate for next November's Gubernatorial election.  Let's stop burning those bridges, my friends.

We will need to pull together behind either Christy or Charlie.

And another thing: you just KNOW that the Dems are going to rally to replace our departed Senior Senator with another Liberal Democrat...if we Republicans are able to pull together behind one singularly qualified candidate and seat a Republican in the Senate the Dems will re-unite like never before to hold on to that Governor's seat....it is all very dynamic at this point in time.

But he has done a few things in the last few weeks that are making that impossible.

First, he wants to build a diesel power plant next to a school in one of the poorest sections of Brockton...  Like we need more stigma here.

Second, he's aligning himelf with some pretty dirty politics, like holding a free event at Campenelli Stadium the same night as a paid event for the MASSGOP in the same venue.  Nice...  Siphon off all those people.

Mihos will lose Brockton, his home town because of the stance he chooses to take.

Mihos did not host a free event at Campenelli Stadium siphoning off people/money. Christy bought tickets for the event in advance (helping the MassGOP raise money) and gave them to willing Republicans free of charge. He helped the MassGOP pay off debt while allowing Republican voters to enjoy the event free of charge. The tickets he bought were bought from the MassGOP. I don't see how that is dirty politics.
