REPUBLICANS PUSH MIHOS TO RUN FOR TREASURER

REPUBLICANS PUSH MIHOS TO RUN FOR TREASURER

Foxborough, MA...Today Angela Davis, Republican Town Committee Chairwoman, has called for Christy Mihos to run for State Treasurer by launching a draft Christy for Treasurer facebook effort.

Charlie Baker's entry into the 2010 race for Governor has generated substantial interest within GOP circles to get former independent Mihos to run for the open State Treasurer's seat.
"Mihos left the Republican Party over 4 years ago and bitterly attacked our Republican nominee in the debates and television commercials.  His actions hurt our efforts in 2006 and unfortunately, the Commonwealth elected Deval Patrick who has been a disaster.  We cannot afford another 4 years of a Patrick administration, and therefore, we must avoid a bitter primary," stated Davis.  "We would like to welcome back Christy to the Republican Party,  and we hope his motives are pure.  Due to his attacks in 2006 he needs to regain our trust. That's why I along with others think that Treasurer would be a better fit for him both politically and professionally based on his business experience.  Christy has a sharp financial acumen,  and we need to think strategically about putting our best people in the right positions to create an excellent leadership team for our Commonwealth."

adavis :: REPUBLICANS PUSH MIHOS TO RUN FOR TREASURER
A Mihos candidacy for treasurer would position the Republican Party to make similar gains as they did in 1990 when Weld was elected to the Corner Office and Joe Malone won the Treasurer's office.  Baker has already identified himself as a Weld Republican and Mihos talks about being a street fighter like Malone.

Davis strongly believes with Tim Cahill chickening out of the Democrat Primary with Deval that the GOP needs to avoid both a bitter and costly Primary.  "There are only 6 weeks between the Primary and General Elections.  It will be hard to unify in such a short time period.  Hence if we could start to rally now behind Charlie Baker for Governor and Christy Mihos for Treasurer, it would be an outstanding win-win for both the party and our candidates.  This would be a key strategic turning point for the party." added Davis.

Over the past several months the Foxborough Republican Town Committee has been extremely active.  They have held fundraisers with Todd Feinberg of WRKO and Michael Graham of WTKK.  They have also been selling 1.06.11 bumperstickers, which would be the first day of a Baker administration.

Excellent Idea (0.00 / 0)
Christy really should run for Treasurer. Its still early enough to switch, he will win the nomination no problem, and he really has a good set of skills for the job. I think the party would back him 100%, and he's got name recognition which most GOP Constitutional Office candidates don't.

That being said, Christy's eyes are on the Corner Office on Beacon Hill. Christy Mihos is an ambitious person, and will not let anything get in his way. The sitting Lt. Governor Kerry Healey would not deter him from running three years ago, and therefore I don't see how he would defer to Charlie Baker now. Furthermore, I doubt he is receptive to the wishes of other people, for the most part, Christy Mihos will only do what he really wants to do. I doubt this petition will work. I would really be suprising if he changed his mind. I pray he proves me wrong.

Saw this at Lone Republican. (5.00 / 1)
Holly Robichaud's headline was "Growing movement-Mihos for Treasurer."  And as evidence was a facebook group that amounted to about 20 people.

Christy is running for governor.  Let the man be.  If you are so freaked out by a primary than have Baker run for Treasurer.  He's only been running for governor for a few days, no biggie if he switches now.

I got the facebook invite and then saw this post on Holly's asinine Herald blog. Growing movement, give me a break.

I don't know Ms. Davis, but I hope she considers that what shes doing might be very divisive and contemptuous of Christy. Lets all show a little more love to the candidates running on our side of the aisle.

a message from Angela Davis (0.00 / 0)
Hello from Ms. Davis here, and contrary to the minority who feel a "draft" is divisive, consider this:  running as a republican, losing a primary, screwing the GOP and running as an independent, launching commercials with folks heads inverted up their behinds, and bad mouthing the GOP primary choice and saying you'd rather vote for deval:   might I ask folks to look up the word divisive?

I so enjoy the discourse, but the only folks who would say a soft "draft" movement is divisive, and overlook Mihos' actions a few years ago have clearly been living overseas for a few years......

However, for your edification, the primary that hosts numerous candidates, who have acted respectfully, well to that I say "Game on".  Brilliant.

My very best to you,
angela davis

What is divisive. (5.00 / 2)
Terms are being thrown around like "growing movement" and now you refer dismissively to "the minority" who hold a contrary opinion.  You are pulling these terms out of thin air.  Expecting anyone to buy this is insulting.  This isn't a growing movement.  It isn't any kind of movement at all.  It is a political ploy, I assume, devised by you.  And as political ploys go, frankly it sucks.

Couldn't be more dismissive even if you were an actual moonbat could you?

Bring your thoughts on Christy being a detriment to light, then just go vote for Charlie...DONE.

Your NOT the queen of who runs for ANYTHING.....

"Joe Malone for Congress." (5.00 / 1)
This reminds me of the "Joe Malone for Congress" line that was floating around in 1998.  It was never going to happen.  It was just a way to try and declare Cellucci the "legitimate" nominee before the primary had occurred.  Similarly this talk is designed to try an make Baker declared the front runner before he had to take positions on issues.

Overall, it's not a bad political strategy.  If I were running Baker's campaign I'd float this out there.  I just don't expect Mihos to actually go for it.

"Victory is Mine!" - Stewart Gilligan Griffin.

I don't understand the motivation (0.00 / 0)
I mean I understand why some might want to opt for treasurer, but I don't I understand why he would consider it.  There's no reason a primary has to be bitter, and let the best man win I feel.  By all accounts Christy has made amends with the GOP...there may be a few who will never forgive him, but that is not the consensus I've been hearing.

But the man feels likes he's qualified to be Governor....so much so he chose to go it alone.  That takes a fair amount of political motivation (some would call it ego....I would call it ambition).  So let the man be.  If he has a better message, delivery and skills than Baker, then so be it.  Mihos obviously had a bit more time in the limelight, so he come off bit more polished.

I'd like to hear the two (or three) voice their ideas, attitudes and presentation in a primary.

The Governor's race is no doubt important, but lets not lose sight of Beacon Hill.  A veto proof majority can (and has) crippled progress in restoring some fiscal discipline to the obese, lumbering, state budget.  The state is addicted to spending money....and someone needs to take their needles away SOON.

I think I have a better idea... (4.50 / 4)
I agree with both DD4RP and Patrick about letting Mihos run for whatever he wants, but I have an idea I think he should consider.

Christy has built a reputation on being a straight shooter who looks out for the taxpayer and fights to stop the Culture of Corruption on Beacon Hill.

The lifeblood of that Culture of Corruption is the patronage and duplication in state government.  The high cost of doing anything.  Eabo has called attention to just one part of that in the Prevailing Wage Law which add $0.18 to every dollar spent on a public works projects here in the Baystate.

Christy showed his ability fighting the Culture of Corruption on the Turnpike Board.

What State Constitutional office has the power of oversight over the agencies of the government?  Governor?  Sure.  But the most overlooked position, the one where a reform Republican could truly make a difference?

State Auditor.

Imagine, Christy Mihos with cau blanche to Audit the finances of every state agency, rooting out waste and inefficiency.  Every Democrats worst nightmare.

Could Christy win?  Sure.  He spent $2 million to run for Governor four years ago.  Imagine if he unleashed an equal amount, plus another $2 million he could raise from a united GOP against no-show Joe Denucci and his whopping $300K war chest?

It be ugly for Denucci, and could help us break-up one of the biggest road blocks to real reform in the stat, specifically the Pancheco Law.

Mr. Mihos, Run for Auditor.  You'll have lots of fun, and do a great service for the Commonwealth.

Cal... (0.00 / 0)
Not a bad idea but you know who I think should run for auditor ;-)

[ Parent ]
Cal - you aren't the first to think of this. (4.50 / 2)
I personally had that conversation with him three years ago.  My argument was that anybody who could become a millionaire off the margin on a quart of milk could CERTAINLY do a good job as Auditor.

He wanted to be Governor.

I suggested a run against Delahunt - now that he lived on Cape, he still had great Cohasset connections, and could be a strong candidate.

He wanted to be Governor.

Period.  He didn't want - and doesn't want now - to go to DC, get a better office, work as a Secretary, and so on.

He wants to be Governor.

And he's been working on this for over four years.  That's why I get so impatient with this 'Hey!  Let's put on a show in the Barn!  Oh, and let's run FRED for Senate!' attitude.  Christy doesn't need to be drafted or cajoled.

He wants to be governor.

When (5.00 / 1)
Baker declared his running for Governor everyone knew the "establishment" would run to him as the 'Golden Boy'.

But, I didn't expect THIS kind of nonsense..
Look, SUPPORT a candidate all you want, but to try to PUSH/NUDGE/SWAY another candidate OUT....

I was furious with Christy in 2006, but he came clean and I feel if he loses the primary he will support Baker.
I want to make MY choice based on where they BOTH stand on the ISSUES.
I could give a rats ass about what the establishment thinks, and when things like this get done it makes me want to vote for Christy just for principle!!!

Smarten up MassGOP, your in mASS, you already don't have many friends...stop trying to lose some of them.

Best candidate win (5.00 / 1)
I don't expect Christy Mihos to run for any other seat other than governor.

Regardless to whoever runs for governor - be it Charlie Baker, Gerry Dembrowski, or someone yet to step into the arena I have just 1 thing to say: may the best candidate win!

I hope that we will have strong, vigorous, vibrant, civil, & principled primary.

Well said (0.00 / 0)
Lets not play insider games and tell people what they should do or try to diminish their candidacies from the very start. A primary will be a good thing for the party, and who knows Christy may very well decide in his own right months from now that he may run for a different office.

Lets not fold our arms and try to keep Christy out of the process. Don't know who I'm supporting, but I give Christy a lot of credit for coming back and mending as many bridges as he has. Welcome back to the fight Christy, this time I know our side will win!

Bring on the primary (0.00 / 0)
What better way to GET exposure than to have a true Republican primary?  In 2006 the Dems had 3 candidates get months worth of media exposure during the primary while Christy Mihos and Kerry Healey sat mostly silent in the wings.  Patrick came out of that primary with a head start while Healey and Mihos, already at a disadvantage, had to start from a near standstill.  If the Republicans had held a primary battle, it could have prevented the split vote and maybe made the final election closer.

Run a clean primary, but an honest primary and let the best candidate win.  The GOP needs positive press and clean discussion of ideas, if the Dems want to run on Deval's record and avoid a primary with Cahill, let them make the mistake this time.  Maybe I'm being naive here, but use the primary to sway independant and dismayed voters to the Republican ticket instead of letting Cahill take them from our voting block.  If either Baker or Mihos are the GOP candidate, they need to get their names in the media with their positive ideas.

If the GOP wants a run at State Auditor or State Treasurer, we need to find more candidates and get them out soon, but I see a strong GOP primary as something that can help rebuild the base.

Mihos (0.00 / 0)
I think people would have been okay with 3 people in the primary, and left it alone, if one of the candidates weren't christie.

We are worried about his reaction to possibly losing a primary.

He needs to rebuild respect, he needs to work for our trust, because that has been diminished.

Of course he can step back in, but he needs to work on building relationships now and trust.

What happens if he loses this primary? We have to ask.

Mihos for Treasurer? Absolutely horrible idea..... (5.00 / 1)
First, the state GOP needs a primary for the publicity.  If Mihos is out then there really is no one to have Charlie Baker debate.  The primary is very important to the party,

Second, suppose Charlie Baker is an incompetent twit and can't debate and can't talk in public venues.  I don't think that is the case, but you never know.  We can't prematurely nominate a favorite as we might find out that Baker has had scandalous affairs and mismanaged money.  I am sure that is not the case, but stranger things have happened.

Third, it is entirely up to Christy Mihos what office he runs for.  The party gets to decide who they endorse, but not who runs.

Fourth, any assumption that Charlie owns this party nomination is dead wrong.  To be the party candidate you must EARN that privilege.

Fifth and last, I haven;t decided who I am voting for yet, so why does the Foxborough RTC get to make that choice for me?

Run for the Office You Want (0.00 / 0)
A candidate should run for the office that he or she wants and can make a difference in.  The party should not attempt to steer candidates to other offices that they do not desire in order to fill out the ticket.  The candidate that changes the office that he or she is seeking on the basis of short term considerations looks like an equivocator.

I point to 1998 when there were two candidates that wanted to run for treasurer which at the time was held by Mr. Malone.  They argued that the other should run for something else.  One eventually switched to auditor.  Both looked silly in the process.

In short, let Christy be Christy and Charlie be Charlie.  They are both smart enough to know what they want to do and evaluate their chances to realize their goals.

In Principle I agree (0.00 / 0)
We want people to be motivated for a particular office, and to choose freely. I would never deny that. However, as the GOP consistently has difficulty fielding qualified challengers to the Constitutional Offices, would it not make sense to spread the few viable candidates we have and challenge the Democrats in the General Election, rather than kill off all our candidates in the same primary by ourselves. To some degree you all are all right, let people run for what they want. But it is the role of the Party to recruit and organize the GOP ticket against the Democrats going into the next election. Diverting candidates from one race to another is a good way to do so, but that probably should happen before certain candidates announce for an office.

As long as Mihos runs as a Republican (0.00 / 0)
He should run for what he wishes.

I think our Party is served best by a Primary.

then a primary it shall be.... (0.00 / 0)
of course the candidates decide what path to take and the GOP will decide who their best bet is.

Having a spirited primary with three candidates is not the problem. Folks are missing the point.

Point is this:  we have a candidate who has not been trustworthy, asking for your blessing again.

Under ordinary circumstances, bring it on. Primary-great, the more the merrier.  The going concern remains is the one who left the party and acted with disrespect a changed man?

I simply put the question out there.

How do we know that if he loses he won't be a spoiler again?  And vindictive?

Just asking the question because I don't have the answers and appreciate the group discussion.

Great Intentions! (0.00 / 0)
I know adavis, and she has the best intentions in her mission to have Christy Mihos at least consider the Treasurer position.  Like many when it was first suggested, I also thought it at least deserved consideration by Mihos and those in his campaign.  That being said, if and when Christy says "thanks for your ideas and input but I'm not interested", then I'm sure that may be the end of the story.  Heck, even just "floating" this idea has got some write up in my local papers, talk on my talk show and some of my local "activist" talking.  If this gets people interested and talking about the election and Candidates names and qualifications, than I'm happy that adavis already produced some interest with the masses this early in the season.
