Governor Deval Patrick labels opponents as "Bastards".

by: Vote3rdpartynow

(You'll be seeing this Bastard tomorrow night Deval. Be ready because the questions will be tough....... So now I'm not just an ignoramous cynic, I'm fatherless as well... - promoted by EaBo Clipper)

Patrick said that during his summer town hall tour attendees have urged him to stay his course.

"I get a lot of 'hang in there, you know, we love what you're doing, don't let the bastards get you down,' that sort of thing, and they could be talking about any number of bastards, by the way," Patrick said during a News Service interview.

I found this story here: http://antidevalcabal.blogspot...
Which found the story here: http://www.wickedlocal.com/bel...

So who is Governor Deval Patrick talking about when he labels people as "Bastards"?  I know that when I have used that ugly term on this website I have been criticized.  I wonder if the same people that found fault with my use of the word will do the same with the Governor?

I hear it also! (5.00 / 2)

The term and the spirit of the exhortation is prevalent.   Yet I hear it in another meaning---that we can't take anymore.  The one-party dominance and the abuse of power and corruption it brings is hurting our State's ability to compete and for our Citizens to pursue a safe and happy existence.  Quality of Life in the Commonwealth is deteriorating.   We need balance and to me that means re-building the Republican Party by electing men and women to the Legislature who will do public service and not be there serving themselves.
That is why I pledge not to seek, nor accept any MASS GOP donations to my Campaign.   ALL donations to the State Party MUST be given to our Legislative Candidates to fund them properly and elect Republicans.   In the past, those state party donations were taken almost exclusively by our candidates for Governor.   We number 5 senators and 16 representatives:  21 of 200---that is not balance.

Governor Elect Bill Weld came into State Government with 16 Republican Senators and 38 Republican Representatives.  We can do it again!!!!!!

The statement is a bit out of context (0.00 / 0)
In this specific instance Deval is relating the sentiments that he is hearing from others, not saying them directly in the first person so that may be the reason it didn't hit the major media outlets.

That being said, I have no doubt he feels that way about those who disagree with him.  He seems to have a very elitist attitude toward people who don't have his background or education or those who oppose his idea.  He has explicitly called his opponents stupid, ignorant and any number of derogatory statements of those he disagrees with multiple times in public venues.  Everything we just be so much better if we just did it his way and didn't question his "wisdom" because he knows all.

Yup Deval - "Magic can happen here".  ***POOF***, our money, faith in state government, and your credibility is disappearing before our very eyes.

Let me explain... (0.00 / 0)
No one ever gives Republicans a chance to explain their "out of context" remarks. All we will remember is that Deval Patrick called his opponents "bastards." Politics is perception. If a Republican had said this, do you think ANYONE would have given them a chance to explain? No. Democrats would have been all over that person.

It doesn't matter whether Deval really thinks what he said. Although I suspect that he does think we're all a bunch of fools given his elitest attitude toward other people. What matters is that it shows poor judgment on his part to use that phrase even in reference to a song. I bet a bunch of people don't know that's a Rolling Stones song.

Just stupidity. Pure and simple.

Oh trust and believe (0.00 / 0)
I'm not defending Deval or the media for that matter.  You're dead on with your assertion about the treatment of the public statements by anyone who is not a DEM.  I've seen live interviews where statements by non-DEMS are taken completely out of context, or downright twisted into something that couldn't be further from what the subject said.  It's a slow battle I've had with people who are more liberal than I, but it has been a loosing battle. I always try to get as many accounts as possible of any story, cause I learned long ago if I want to actually understand what was said, I'm not going to get it from the mainstream papers.

I once had an ongoing argument for weeks with a local DEM that the Boston Globe and NYTimes don't have liberal perspective.  He was completely convinced they were fair and objective.  Even after I showed him countless examples where stories were buried, not reported, or the missteps of a DEM were explained away or justified.  It made no difference.  I was beyond frustrated, and finally start to make some headway when I presented it as media being based in liberal population centers and catering to their readers in an effort to sell their product (even though I think that less of a motivation).  That finally made sense to him.

While Deval Patrick may have been taken out of context & the usage may have been rather rude, I really can't get too worked up about this.

Personally?  The first thing I thought of was an old episode of M*A*S*H where Capt. Hawkeye Pierce is working on a dying patient, giving him chest compressions I believe, and screams at him saying "DON'T LET THE BASTARD WIN!"

Someone oversees this & asks what Pierce meant by it and is told that "the bastard" is Death.

Okay, I'm a TV geek but the metaphorical usage of "bastard" while probably impolite in most situations doesn't really ruffle my feathers.

Gee ... I wonder who's words those were?
Who woulda thunk that Deville would have to add such a hearing impediment to go with all his other ailments; poor man.

This is a trend. (5.00 / 1)
Remember when the right (and left) was lambasting him for his silly spending on curtains, Cadillacs and personal assistants and he told us we were being 'petty'.  Or how about the time during the campaign when he told LG Kerry Healey to 'Get off your high horse'?  Deval Patrick looks down on the average man or woman - so much so that any dissenting opinion is 'petty' or arrogant or from a group of 'bastards'.

RedheadRepublican is right - Deval can say these things, but a Republican would be hung from the highest tree.  Worse yet is that Deval labels people this way without any fear of rebuke.

"Words mean something" don't they?  Christy2010 is spot-on.  This is a sign of the abuses of a one party system.  It is not about political parties though - it is about our state and its ability to compete, and for our citizens to pursue a safe and happy existence.

BNCordeiro - I know you to always be a gentleman, but this should make you a bit madder than you appear.  Deval wasn't referring to 'death' when he made this statement.  He was talking about 'us', the people who oppose his silly tax and spend policies.  He was talking about the people that cut corners, save for their children's education, put away a few bucks every week for their retirement, and at the end of the week try to do the right thing.  YOU are the bastards.  When Deval says 'Any number of bastards' he is referring to the people that oppose him on any number of fronts - individual income taxes, government intrusion, health care, illegal immigration, corporate taxes, local aid, the Turnpike tolls, etc.  We are the Bastards.....Deval is saying; "we" are the "Bastards".

WE ARE THE BASTARDS
I've paid my taxes -
Time after time -
I've done my sentence
But committed no crime -
And bad mistakes
I've made a few
I've had my share of elections kicked in my face -
But I've come through

We are the bastards - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting till the end -
We are the bastards -
We are the bastards
No time for losers
Cause we are the bastards - of the world -

I've taken my bows
And my curtain calls -
Deval took my income and fortune and everything that goes with it
I thank you Deval -

But it's been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise -
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race -
And I never lose -

We are the bastards - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting till the end -
We are the bastards -
We are the bastards
No time for losers
Cause we are the bastards - of the world -
