Dimasi Indicted!

by: Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie

Tue Jun 02, 2009 at 15:44:08 PM EDT

(Biggest story of the week - promoted by Garrett)

Boston Globe

Former Massachusetts House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi and three associates have been indicted for a scheme in which DiMasi allegedly used his influence to steer state computer software contracts to a Canadian company, according to court records.

DiMasi was charged with conspiracy, honest services mail fraud, aiding and abetting, and honest services wire fraud, in the awarding of contracts to Cognos ULC, according to an indictment filed in US District Court in Boston.

Sal Dimasi makes three Democratic speakers in a row to face indictments from federal grand juries.  The liberals wonder why we'd rather keep our own money than have it taken from us by Beacon Hill.  This is one of the reasons.  The Democratic corruption machine treats crime as business as usual.  They use our money to commit fraud and write illegal contracts.  They give away cushy hack jobs to their politically connected friends or whoever bribes them the most.

MORE BELOW THE FOLD....

Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie :: Dimasi Indicted!
This is yet another issue to hit Democrats on in 2010.  Yes, there was plenty of corruption on their part in the '08 cycle as well.  This alone will not win anything.  It's just one of the dominos that needs to fall.

For most freshman house Democrats, voting to keep Dimasi in power was one of the very first votes they took.  When issues for political reform come up during house debates this is yet another good bullet point that can be raised.

Incidentally, this makes 3 Democrat speakers carried off in cuffs since Brad Jones was first elected to the state house in 1994.  I seriously doubt this will ever happen with Jones or Tisei.  I don't think there is a single member of our delegations on Beacon Hill who got involved in politics for illegal kickbacks and bribes.  Who would they sell out to?  Virtually 100% of the government corruption here in Massachusetts is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party.  It's not a "few bad apples" either.  In the State House, this all starts at the top.

"When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators." -PJ O'Rourke

Is it any surprise that in a state which embraces big government there would be openings for this kind of activity. When something fishy is going on with a $15 Million dollar contract in a 30 Billion dollar budget... no one notices, its a drop in the bucket.

The bigger the government... the bigger the corruption.

What? No! (0.00 / 0)
A Speaker of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives indicted?  Why, that hasn't happened since,...since....the last time we had a Speaker of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives.

Mass GOP to Voters: Hold Accountable DiMasi's 135 Supporters (0.00 / 0)
The third consecutive indictment of a Democrat House speaker is a complete disgrace.  While the federal government seeks to hold Sal DiMasi accountable, we will seek to hold accountable the 135 Democrats who ignored the obvious scandal and re-elected him as speaker in January.  Every House member who supported DiMasi will be called out for endorsing his corrupt leadership.  It is time, once again, to clean up the mess on Beacon Hill by electing new legislators who are committed to small government, lower taxes and finally ending the culture of corruption and waste. - Mass GOP Chairman Jennifer A. Nassour

I would go one step further and......... (0.00 / 0)
find out who voted for the last 3 Speakers.  Surely there must be a group of state reps that voted for all 3.

Might take some digging but great idea.

(Ignoring the fact that Rs voted for the last one)

Are you telling me this photo is Sal DiMasi? (0.00 / 0)

3rd time may be a charm (0.00 / 0)
If this were any place but Massachusetts I'd say the established majority is not long for this world.  However I'd settle for enough of a presence to be able to sustain a veto.

Anyone have any advanced info on the seats that are being challenged the next time around ?

OK folks, help me out here.  Why do so many seats just go uncontested ?  Is it that:

1) truly successful conservatives are too busy working and being successful to run for office and face a potential huge cut in pay?  I'd run myself, but my family would starve (that and lack of any prior public office may be a hindrance)

2) Selling a fiscally conservative message to the likes of those who have the portrait of JFK hanging over their mantle just an insurmountable challenge?

3) Is the electorate just so stubborn they'd vote for a canned ham over anyone with an (R) after their name for fear they are some version of George Bush.

4) Do we just suffer from battered voter syndrome?

5) Fill an an answer of your choice

Help me out because I am stumped.  There's no reason this shouldn't be a landslide other than this is Massachusetts.

Here is one fundamental reason..... (5.00 / 1)
Republicans don't think of politics as a career.  Republicans tend to think of government office as something you do because you are pissed off at the folks that are doing it wrong.

Democrats study politics in college with the intent of doing it for a lifetime as a career.  Look at the Democrats that run in many elections - they are 20 something guys with fancy suits that regurgitate the liberal talking points.  They have no clue what they are talking about and even less of a clue as to how it affects the economics of the localities or the state.  They have never worked a day in private enterprise.

Republican candidates, what few there are, tend to be white men that are in their 50s that are retired from the armed forces, and are looking for a second career.  By then they are considered out of touch and typical Republicans...

I would love to run for office, most especially because I need a job.  But truthfully, I have no idea how to be a legislator.  I have never studied politics or civics and so I leave it to others.  Regrettably many others are a lot like me.  Furthermore, when I am working, I earn about 50 percent more than most legislators and with three kids that want to go to college I can't take the pay cut.

Somehow we need to figure out how to get young conservatives to start thinking of politics as a career.  Then we need to support them with everything we have so others will follow in their footsteps.

You Hit A Key Point .. (0.00 / 0)
Who wants a lousy paying career? An honest politician would be condemning themselves to limited potential. A state rep makes what, 50 something K? What could they make in private business?
This is why, when discussing a politicians "salary", we do so laughingly because there is an assumption that the "salary" is but a small part of the compensation "package". IMO a lot can be gained by getting that entire package above board and into the daylight. Then maybe what you say about getting younger folks interested in such "careers" may be more possible.

Being a legislator is not that far off (0.00 / 0)
from a town meeting member.  Just that there is no party designation and it is twice per year. I don't know what your hometown is v3pn. If you have TM in your town I would encourage you to become one if not already.

As the youngest person on the finance committee in fhvn at 25. I find as long as you do research and study Roberts rules you can make an informed decision just like the legislators in the State house and congress. And still stick to your principles without compromise

The hard part is campaigning and fund raising as a legislator.

Massachusetts TM provides a good farm system for legislators. Which is why the Dems take advantage of it. We can too.

Ex-Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi is facing up to 20 years in prison for allegedly taking kickbacks in yet another State House corruption scandal that has cast a pall over Beacon Hill and sent the onetime iron-fisted leader's former colleagues scrambling for cover.

politicians don't go to jail (0.00 / 0)
they get off on technicalities or they get a reduced sentence.  the only politician to go to jail was good old Jim Traficant, and he was practically begging to be sent there.

no, jail and prisons are just places that poor people like us get sent, not where the aristocracy are expected to end up.

no justice, no peace.

Nelson Mandela went to jail. (0.00 / 0)

Governments have no problem sending people to prison who become inconvenient to the people who control power.
