Salon has this intriguing article: Why doesn’t anyone know we’re incredibly close to replacing the Electoral College with the popular vote?
A quick scan of the RMG archives makes me think we completely missed this one. According to the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact site it’s already a done deal here in MA. Deval Patrick signed it into law in 2010.
On July 27, 2010, the Massachusetts Legislature completed action on the National Popular Vote bill (H 4156) and sent it to Governor Deval Patrick for his consideration. The Senate’s final vote on enactment was 28-9. On June 2, 2010, the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed the National Popular Vote bill by a 113-35 vote.
Here’s hoping for a future scenario where Elizabeth Warren wins the Electoral College, Trump wins the popular vote, and then the NPV compact kicks in to secure Trump a second term.
