An Open Letter to Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley

An Open Letter to Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley:
What if you had The Truth, The Way, and The Light but never bothered to share it?
It is disgraceful that the Church established by the same Jesus who pointed out the corruption and errant teaching of his contemporaries has basically abdicated bringing that practice into a generation that sorely needs it.
I think I know why, and it’s no excuse. People may never forgive our Church for what happened with the sexual abuse cases, no matter how many positive steps are taken, which you have taken. That moral failure does not mean our Church should remain silent while people who often have deep underlying internal conflicts are advised by our society to mutilate the gift of the body God gave them – and establish laws which not only enable that mutilation but require women acting in their own defense in enclosed, vulnerable spaces risk facing hate crimes charges. The Church teaches that our bodies are not our own, that they are a gift from God we should sanctify and maintain for their good and proper uses on earth.
I have been struggling with church attendance recently but when I, flawed as I am, and willing to stand up for what the Church teaches and the Bishops aren’t, tell me why my next action shouldn’t be to walk right up to the Pastoral Center in Braintree and demand the “money changers” in the temple be driven out until someone who actually acts like the Son of God loves us, died for us, and showed us the way to holy living on earth and eternal salvation takes the reigns?
This is not the first time our Church’s shepherds in Massachusetts have failed their mission to the poor and vulnerable because of cowardice in the face of social regression. They also failed to act when Catholic Adoption Services was driven out of caring for children because they adhere to the natural reality that wherever possible children deserve to be adopted to a married mother and father. Not a few years later their was a massive scandal with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and it’s abhorrent disregard for the children under its purported “care.” Our moral cowardice DOES have injurious effects. We’re the Church established by The Christ, not the Church established by the “nice.”
You are leading your flock astray, shepherds. You more than anyone should know the eternal consequences of that. Please with the Grace of God, adjust accordingly. You have our prayers, but please, for the sake of your flock, reflect for yourselves and show the same courage as our Lord and Savior did when he stood up to the principalities and powers, earthly and otherwise, of his day. May God continue to bless you. ~a mere layman, Brian Kennedy of Taunton, in the Diocese of Fall River.
