“Free at last!” exclaimed former MA Governor Bill Weld as he accepted the VP slot on Gary Johnson ticket yesterday at the Libertarian Convention. Weld pledged his loyalty to he Libertarian Party, stating that he is “Libertarian for life”, which he claimed means “not going back to any other Party”. Weld also stated that he is “relieved” to finally be rid of the “Republican Party’s anti-choice, anti marriage equality” social policies. Free Willy is indeed free at last.
And free too are all of us in the Republican Party here in MA. We are free of a disloyal, self serving political hack. Free of a man who virtually ruined the MA Republican Party during and immediately after his tenure as Governor. Free of the man who endorsed community activist Democrat Barack Obama for President in 2008, over war hero and Republican John McCain. Free of a man, who along with Baker and Kaufman in 2015 filed a brief in Federal Court undermining Republican Party Platform values and supporting Democrat Party Platform values. And most important we are free of a man who in November of 2016 openly endorsed Democrat Michael Day over Republican Caroline Colarusso in the Stoneham State Rep race. Colarusso lost be only a few votes, hurt in part by the failure of the MA GOP (coincidentally of course) to send out her final political mailing.
In the summer of 2015, the MA Republican State Committee had the opportunity to reprimand Traitor Bill by name in a resolution that came before the body. But the State Committee failed to stand on principal, and opted to pass a generic reprimand of all Republican leaders engaged in tactics harmful to Republican candidates. This was a mistake. Not until the State Committee learns the absolute value of loyalty towards our platforms, our mission statement and our candidates will we as Party ever regain relevance here in this state.
Weld has pledged never to come back to the Republican Party. Let’s hope this time he can be true to his word and the cause for which he now stands. Somehow however I doubt it.
