From Jim Wallace at GOAL:
BOSTON (July 22, 2015) – The Gun Owners’ Action League (GOAL), announced today it will file new legislation, “An Act Relative to ‘Gun Free’ Zones” to address problems with the state’s “Gun Free” zones. This important legislation will be filed on GOAL’s behalf by Rep. John C. Velis (D-Westfield) and will create a commission to review current and future policies regarding the dangers of “Gun Free” zones in the Commonwealth and make recommendations in order to increase the ability of citizens to defend themselves in these areas.
“This legislation would analyze our current laws about ‘Gun Free’ zones here in Massachusetts,” said Rep. Velis. “In light of the recent attacks in Tennessee, it’s extremely important that we evaluate our current laws and see if there are better ways to protect the public. I believe this legislation will bring the best minds together to identify potentially unsafe areas and come up with solutions for increasing the safety of the
citizens of the Commonwealth.”
“Over the last decade it has become evident that these so-called “Gun Free” zones have actually become ‘no defense zones’,” said Jim Wallace, Executive Director of GOAL. “Tragically, they have also become targets for terrorists and murderers. The recent cowardly terrorist attack in Tennessee only makes it further clear that we must address the failed “No Defense” zone policy. Citizens of all walks of life, whether in uniform or not, should have the right to defend themselves and others in any place they have the right to be. It is our hope that this legislation be passed immediately so work can begin to make the Commonwealth a safer place.”
Under the new legislation, a commission will be tasked with reviewing current state policies regarding facilities, properties, and areas where lawful citizens are not allowed to carry items for self-defense including: firearms, defensive sprays and knives. The commission will then work to identify current unsafe areas that need immediate policy changes. The Commission will then provide recommendations for increasing the
safety in these areas including allowing citizens to carry self-defense items.
GOAL is the official state firearms association in Massachusetts, which was founded in 1974 to protect the Second Amendment rights of the Commonwealth’s law-abiding citizens. It is the largest Massachusetts member supported civil rights grassroots organization with over 17,000 members who believe in the basic right of firearms ownership for competition, recreation and self-protection. GOAL works directly with both legislators and community organizers to establish successful public outreach and educational programs to make gun ownership safe for all Massachusetts residents.
