Sure, it might reduce by half the number of IVF procedures, and cause lots of fertility clinics to close and lay off their staffs, but so what? IVF does not save anyone’s life, it is completely discretionary. Right now the public is forced to subsidize IVF, it is part of our mandated health insurance coverage. How much does that cost us, I don’t know, but no one should be forced to subsidize it at all.
Though medical and marital privacy might mean that there is a right to use IVF, there is certainly no right for it to be free. The cost should be borne by the patients choosing to undergo the procedure, and it should be taxed at 100% to recoup some of the social cost of allowing it.
