Debate:  Will the Massachusetts Payment Reform Proposals Help Control Health Care Costs? Pioneer’s Josh Archambault vs. Health Care for All’s Brian Rosman (Hosted by CommonWealth Magazine)

Josh is working hard to provide a steady stream of insightful analysis to help us understand what’s in this legislation.  We’re posting new videos and blogs almost every day, so check us out!

Pioneer worked with David Paleologos to conduct a poll of parents, teachers, and lawmakers to gauge their support for a US History MCAS graduation requirement in our K-12 schools. The Board of Education postponed implementing the test, claiming the annual $2.4 million was too expensive. However, our poll showed that most lawmakers believe funding could be found in the budget for this exam, and the majority of those surveyed think we need to focus more on US History instruction. Decision-time on Extended Learning

While it might be politically expedient for education leaders to continue promoting Extended Learning Time as an approach to education reform, Jim Stergios says it is time to face the reality that ELT, despite its $14 million annual price tag, does not work. Wouldn’t it be more effective to spend that money on a proven model of success, such as charter schools?

http://boston.com/community/bl…

Jim takes new College Board head David Coleman to school on America’s founding principles. Coleman, who was instrumental in the Common Core national education standards movement, managed to botch his own video tutorial on how the Federalist Papers are treated in the Common Core standards – a gaffe that is emblematic of why we must fight to keep DC bureaucrats out of K-12 education.  http://boston.com/community/bl…

Zip code shouldn’t be the surest predictor of our children’s futures. Read Pioneer advisor Ken Ardon‘s op-ed in the Taunton Gazette, The MetroWest Daily News, and the Berkshire Eagle on why closing the Commonwealth’s achievement gap among low-income, K-12 students will require expanded school choice options and multiple strategies.

When it comes to getting people back to work, we need to think long term, and for the tens of thousands of long-term unemployed (or underemployed) in Massachusetts, the recent tussle over job-creation data offered little comfort, says Pioneer Senior Fellow John Friar in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette: http://www.telegram.com/articl…

We want to thank everyone who attended our Pioneer New Leaders Kick-Off Event on Monday night. We were honored by the huge turnout, and we owe special thanks to guest speaker David Paleologos, pollster extraordinaire, whose professional insights on the Romney-Obama and Brown-Warren races prompted one of the longest Q&A sessions in Pioneer history! A False Choice on Containing Health Care Costs

Pioneer’s Josh Archambault has been closely watching the health care payment reform legislation on Beacon Hill. He’s been all over it, from analysis of the new mega-agency the proposal creates, to the media coverage’s failure to see the big picture, and the likelihood that neither bill will succeed at controlling costs:

Read Josh’s op-eds on the topic in the MetroWest Daily News: the MA legislature is about to create a massive new agency, the Division of Health Care Cost and Quality, with broad regulatory powers & oversight of billions of dollars. Do we trust their judgment? http://www.wickedlocal.com/wes…

Patrick, Secretary Reville and other state officials must realize the damage the national standards are doing to the high school English curriculum and require yearlong courses in American and British literature, as well as a classical literature course in grade nine or 10.”

Read why Jim Stergios is not grateful about the much-heralded charter cap lift announced this week, and why Jim calls for charterizing the Lawrence School District NOW: “The state is paying for almost the entire $135 million (soon to be $150 million) school budget. Moving to the New Orleans solution, which has raised student scores and improved a number of school metrics, is a no-brainer.” http://boston.com/community/bl…

Steve Poftak asks some good questions about housing authorities in light of recent abuses in Chelsea and Medford. For one, are so many entities really necessary?
