Public Kicked Out of Ways and Means Committee Room Moments Before Vote on $32.3B Budget

State House News Brief

The House Ways and Means Committee has backed a $32.297 billion fiscal 2013 state budget that lacks taxes and fee increases, according to a member of the committee who voted on the bill after reporters were kicked out of a House hearing room. The bill is $14 million slimmer than Gov. Deval Patrick’s budget proposed in January, despite omitting the approximately $250 million in revenue increases Patrick proposed. The bill increases Chapter 70 education aid to cities and towns by $164 million over its current level, according to the member, and it scraps most of the governor’s proposal dealing with community colleges.  Story Developing | 12:05 P.m
