Ever wonder what state Departments of Education actually do? Pioneer is holding an event on September 20th featuring school chiefs from across the country, who will talk about their states’ reforms – Deborah Gist, Commissioner of Education, Rhode Island; Robert Scott, Commissioner of Education, Texas; and Tony Bennett, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Indiana. Massachusetts’ former Commissioner David Driscoll, who oversaw the implementation of the state’s landmark education reform law, will join a panel of experts to share their insights. As Labor Day approaches, can we be confident that our schoolchildren actually know the history of the labor movement, and understand the context of the current national debate on collective bargaining?  Jamie Gass and Charlie Chieppo suggest the answer is a resounding “no” – they point out in today’s Worcester Telegram & Gazette that the state’s failure to restore a US History MCAS graduation requirement has meant that history is a shrinking part of the curriculum in Massachusetts schools.

Should parents of children stuck in failing schools be able to pull the Parent Trigger (“fire the principal, fire 50% of the teachers, close the school or turn it into a charter school”)? Jim Stergios gives his take:

This week’s decision by the Obama Administration to waive accountability provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law shows just how far they will go to foist national standards on all states– and it ultimately lets failing schools off the hook. Pioneer’s Jamie Gass and Charles Chieppo argue that the Obama Administration’s Race to the Top initiative is just a rehashed version of a 20-year old plan to turn public education into workforce training, and serves education insiders rather than students.
