This Week at Pioneer

In a tough economy and a tight budget situation, should state workers get paid to VOLUNTEER? Our Research Director Steve Poftak offered his thoughts on NewsCenter 5 earlier this week – here’s the clip, watch Steve around the 2:20 mark.

Steve also weighs in at Boston Magazine’s blog, Boston Daily, on the “soft costs” of doing business in Massachusetts:

If it’s Sunday, it’s Money Matters – tune in or set your DVR to record the new Fox 25 talk show at 11:30 am. This Sunday, host Chuck Nilosek chats with Pioneer’s Health Care Policy Director, Josh Archambault.

Pioneer goes to the State House! Here are links to testimony presented by Pioneer on three different topics:

Pioneer’s Health Care Policy Director Josh Archambault presented testimony to the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing, opposing the Governor’s payment reform plan.

Education Policy Director Jamie Gass submitted testimony to the Joint Education Committee supporting H3349, which would enable Massachusetts to regain control over education policy, after it was surrendered to the federal government last year through adoption of national standards.

Research Director Steve Poftak urged the Joint Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight to support S1900, An Act to Improve the Administration of State Government and Finance. This bill would implement a system of performance management to help state government agencies operate more efficiently.

http://www.pioneerinstitute.or…

Blogger Michael Morisy asks why the Governor has reneged on his promise of a “more modern and accessible and accountable” government. Morisy also mentions secrecy pacts uncovered by a Globe reporter. Read more here:

Jim Stergios has a boston.com post on the MA Ed. Dept.’s latest backslide on a testing requirement for  US History. Check it out: http://www.pioneerinstitute.or…

Pioneer released the remarks of education expert E.D. Hirsch, delivered at a Northeastern education policy course taught by former MA Senate President Tom Birmingham. Both spoke at our March event, “Liberal Arts and Closing Achievement Gaps.” In his remarks, Hirsch urges policymakers to focus more on building language proficiency in grades Pre-K through 3, and he and Birmingham warned against so-called “21st century skills” pushed by DC-based trade organizations. Hirsch said:

The first principle would be the supreme importance of grades pre-K through 3. Bill Gates has been spending billions on high school with essentially no national effect.
