SERV Volunteer Program
This paid leave program allows eligible employees with six months of service to volunteer during work hours up to 7.5 or 8 hours per month in Massachusetts at an approved site or municipal department in the area of school volunteering, youth mentoring, education, environment, health and human services, or public safety. Advance supervisory approval is required and employees must submit a form verifying hours of volunteer work.
With the sorry state we are in and the Govenor looking to cut 160 beds at Mental Health facilities I say we cut this benefit to State Workers. I don’t know about you but any time I do Volunteer work it is on my time or I use vacation time. Why should we pay people 12 days per year to do the right thing.
Say an employee is making $50,000 per year, which equates to approx. $24 per hour, x 8 hours x 12 days this is about $2,300 per year.
If you have 100 employees doing this you have $230,000 per year.
I am using conservative numbers, and I realize that $230,000 is a drop in the bucket but it’s a start.
I wonder if anyone at the State House would be willing to see what this costs us per year and what we could really be saving?
