Obama’s ‘Margaret Fuller’ Moment

When philosopher Margaret Fuller announced that she ‘had accepted the Universe’, fellow thinker Thomas Carlyle observed, ‘Egad, she’d better’.  The Democrats have accepted the election results.

Obama announced his framework on taxes – all Bush tax cuts extended for two years in return for 13 months unemployment extension.  Death tax also kicked down the road for two years.

He explained in no uncertain terms that he OPPOSED many of these compromises, especially the tax breaks for high earners, but that saving the economy was more important than winning a political war.  He was angry, but focused.

I would have done THREE years instead of two to insulate it from election year pressure (2012 will be easier than 2010?) and a shorter unemployment extension – but this is something we haven’t seen in a while, genuine compromise.
