Finally a Republican has come along who is smart, politically savvy, and willing to do the kind of back-breaking work it takes to make this a real race. Sean Bielat is that candidate in the 4th Congressional District Republican primary.
The 35-year-old ex-Marine (he currently holds the rank of major in the Marine Reserves), an independent consultant, has been running an energetic campaign in the district that runs from Brookline and Newton to New Bedford. With an MBA from the Wharton School and a master’s in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School, Bielat brings a broad range of talent to match his private sector experience with McKinsey & Company and at iRobot, where he was part of a team working on defense-related robots used to destroy roadside bombs.
Although he faces a primary challenge from GOP perennial Earl Sholley, Bielat has focused his campaign on holding Frank’s feet to the fire on such issues as the OneUnited Bank bailout and his previous support of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The uber Washington villain Barney Frank may be expected to win but Bielat has a real chance to catch fire this fall and pull a “Major” upset.
