Sandi Martinez Applauds today’s SCOTUS Decision on the McDonald 2nd Amendment Case

Sandi Martinez, candidate for State Senate in the Third Middlesex District, voiced strong support for today’s Supreme Court decision that pushed the ‘stop’ button on efforts to restrict our right to defend our families.

The Supreme Court says the Constitution’s “right to keep and bear arms” applies nationwide as a restraint on the ability of government to limit its application.  This is a historic ruling, and is a victory for families across the nation and here in Massachusetts.

Martinez stated that “The legislature will finally have to look at public safety issues when it comes to the right to defend yourself, your home, and most importantly, your family.  For those who live in high crime areas, this ruling is most significant.  No longer can our legislators continue to find ways to impede the right to keep and bear arms.  We are free to protect our children and our homes.”

Contacted by Ms. Martinez, Jim Wallace, Executive Director of Gun Owners Action League said “Lawful gun owners in the state will finally get relief from the oppressive gun laws being imposed on Massachusetts citizens”.  When asked by Martinez what this means for Massachusetts and the legislation pending currently in the House, which would restrict lawful purchases to one gun a month, he stated that “This bill would have our citizens arrested for exercising their 2nd Amendment rights.”  Wallace was unsure how the bill could possibly go forward with this newest ruling by our Supreme Court.

While the ruling is complicated, and will take some time to determine many of its specific effects, it appears that this ruling represents a seismic shift in the way our government interprets the US Constitution.

Martinez concluded that “this is a positive step for our families, our freedom and our future.”
