Yesterday, the House of Representatives approved “pay-as-you-go,” legislation which I have advocated for since coming to Congress. Pay-as-you-go is an essential tool in reducing the deficit, and was used to great affect during the Clinton administration when we saw record budget surpluses. The abandonment of this commonsense principle of making sure that there was a way to pay for the money Congress spends was a major contributing factor to the large deficits we now face.
