Once upon a time there was a noble young man seeking the Presidency. He proclaimed:
“We will not take a dime from Washington lobbyists, or special interest PACs. We’re going to change how Washington works. They will not fund my party. They will not run our White House and they will not drown out the voice of the American people when I’m President of the United States.”
You can watch this man, Barack Obama, say those very things by watching the first 60 seconds of this video.
So he gets himself elected and guess what happens? No, he doesn’t run the lobbyists out of town as he claimed. Instead, the Washington lobbyists are set to have the biggest year on record.
Washington’s influence industry is on track to shatter last year’s record $3.3 billion spent to lobby Congress and the rest of the federal government – and that’s with a down economy and about 1,500 fewer registered lobbyists in town, according to data collected by the Center for Responsive Politics.
“Lobbyists love it … when you’ve got an activist agenda like this, and you’ve got serious problems like this, and people want to do something about it,” said James Thurber, director of American University’s Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies.
“It is the most active time that I have ever seen in the advocacy business – from 1973 on,” Thurber added.
The Politico article continues:
“We’ve never had as good a year,” said one lobbyist whose shop deals mostly with financial services and health care issues. “It’s been a tremendously busy year, and it’s going to keep getting that way,” the lobbyist said, noting that both health care and financial reform will remain active as congressional action moves from drafting legislation to implementation to the inevitable fixes.
It was all a lie, wasn’t it? When a person stands up and tells you that he/she is going to do things differently in Washington then you need to watch out. Deval Patrick lied when he said he would lower property taxes – and you believed him. Clearly Barack Obama lied when he said he would not let lobbyists run Washington – and you believed him. Now we have Martha Coakley saying she is going to be a ‘different kind of leader’. In fact she spells it out at the 16 second mark of her ad below. “A different kind of leader“. The problem is that every time we are promised a different kind of leader we get a whole lot more of the leaders we were trying to get rid of in the first place.
