Mass. lawmakers to hold hearing on gas tax bills
By Associated Press |
Massachusetts lawmakers are weighing a series of bills that would hike the state’s gasoline tax.
The gas tax, currently 23.5 cents, would increase by 50 cents under one proposal to help cover the Massachusetts Turnpike’s Big Dig-related debts.
The hearing is scheduled for Monday before the Transportation Committee.
Here is some context to consider relative to a 20 cents increase in the gas tax. If you drive 15,000 miles per year and get 20 miles per gallon, your incremental cost is $150.00. Or put in Deval Partick terms, two large cups of coffee per week.
I also thought the sales tax increase was in lieu of the gas tax increase.
