Congressman Parker Griffith (D – AL) to switch to GOP!

According to Politico Congressman Parker Griffith is going to switch parties and join the GOP later today!  Griffith is a first term congressman elected to Alabama’s 5th Congressional district to fill an open seat.  In 2008, Griffith won his election by a margin of 52% to 48% over Republican Wayne Parker.  John McCain captured 61% and won every county in the 5th congressional that same year. The seat was previously held by Democrat Robert “Bud” Cramer for 18 years.

During his short tenure Griffith has had a relatively conservative voting record.

He has bucked the Democratic leadership on nearly all of its major domestic initiatives, including the stimulus package, health care legislation, the cap-and trade energy bill and financial regulatory reform.

He was one of only 11 House Democrats to vote against the stimulus.

In previous statements Griffith has indicated that he would not vote for Pelosi if she ran for speaker again and preferred to be called an “independent Blue Dog” rather than a Democrat.

Griffith now has $619,000 in the bank to run as a Republican, a total boosted by contributions from several of the Democratic Party’s more liberal leaders. The political action committee of House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer donated $10,000 to Griffith’s reelection this year, and even Pelosi chipped in $4,000 – prior to Griffith’s August remarks.

To give you an idea about how conservative his congressional district here is a negative ad used against Parker Griffith in 2008

Democrat Reps and Senators are realizing that the Obama administration, for all its empty promises of hope and change, is nothing but a band of free spending socialists.  They have no plan other than to label everyone that opposes them as a Nazi or a hater.  And their unfunded spending programs will break the backs of many generations to come.

Some that are new to Capital Hill, and are familiar with the burden of big government, realize the failed direction of Obama/Pelosi/Ried and are doing an ‘aboutface’.

We welcome Rep Parker Griffith and encourage others to do the same.  Before they get voted out……..

  • Yikes

  • …it’s one thing to switch parties from the Minority to the Majority as many Democrats, particularly in the South, did after 1994 (5 House members, and 2 Senators).  It’s entirely a different thing to do so from the Majority to the Minority.

Good for him for standing on principle, and representing his constituents.

  • Great News! Chinks in the Democratic armor with more to come. Wait till the House and Senate try to reconcile the Health Care Bill. It should scare the hell out of what is left of Middle America.
