Pelosi: Jail time and $250,000 fines for those without health insurance!

That’s right – jail time for those without acceptable levels of health insurance is what Nancy Pelosi is after.

Republicans opposed to the bill on the House Ways and Mean Committee said they received confirmation from the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation Friday that the Pelosi/House Democratic bill would penalize Americans who don’t get insurance either from private providers or the government.

“The JCT letter makes clear that Americans who do not maintain “acceptable health insurance coverage” and who choose not to pay the bill’s new individual mandate tax (generally 2.5% of income), are subject to numerous civil and criminal penalties, including criminal fines of up to $250,000 and imprisonment of up to five years,” House Republicans said in a statement Friday.

Read more about it here, but know that the only sensible statement in the whole column was this:

“Individual mandates are a form of corporate welfare, forcing people to buy what they do not need or want and often can’t afford. The push for individual mandates does not emanate from concern over people who are uninsured, but from a desire to create a new funding pool to subsidize health care for others. To the extent it taxes marginal earners, it is Robin Hood in reverse,”Clint Bolick, Goldwater Institute litigation director. The Phoenix-based group favors limited government.

Nancy Pelosi is willing to make healthy young 20-somethings without health care the next massive wave of criminals in this country.  Is this really America anymore?

So let me get this straight Nancy Pelosi – In one operating room a woman is having her 4th unwanted and innocent unborn child ripped out of the womb with a plunger, salad tongs and a set of forceps.  In the next operating room a young man without health insurance is being put back together because he has just been run over by a 4th offense drunk driver – and you think the criminal is the young man?

You live in Massachusetts, no? You’ve lived under a mandate for how many years now? Have you seen hordes of 20-somethings rounded up and incarcerated? Read reports of quarter-million dollar fines being doled out like Skittles on Halloween?

No, but it’s much easier to fear-monger about what could happen rather than have an honest debate about how to make sure all Americans have access to affordable healthcare.

  • Faith healing counts.

Reporting from Washington – Backed by some of the most powerful members of the Senate, a little-noticed provision in the healthcare overhaul bill would require insurers to consider covering Christian Science prayer treatments as medical expenses.

The provision was inserted by Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) with the support of Democratic Sens. John F. Kerry and the late Edward M. Kennedy, both of Massachusetts, home to the headquarters of the Church of Christ, Scientist.

It would have a minor effect on the overall cost of the bill — Christian Science is a small church, and the prayer treatments can cost as little as $20 a day. But it has nevertheless stirred an intense controversy over the constitutional separation of church and state, and the possibility that other churches might seek reimbursements for so-called spiritual healing.

Only $20 a day!  What a deal!  If I pray for myself can I get reimbursed?
