According to the Bangor Daily News Maine’s “Questions 1” to overturn gay marriage passed by a 53% to 47% margin. The 6% margin of victory surprised some people because recent polling showed the measure losing by a 52% to 43% margin. These results are consistent with similar measures around the country where support for marriage as a union between one man and one woman consistently outperforms polling data. In this case, the actual result was 15% better than this particular poll. This measure was also passed after a gay marriage law was put into effect.
