Party or Principle? NY 23rd Special Election.

On Tuesday November 3rd the citizens of New York’s 23rd congressional district will hold a special election to replace former Congressman John McHugh (R).  Do not let the State of New York fool you, New York’s northern most district is both Republican and conservative.  In the last 7 election cycles the Democrats have a high water mark of 36.9%, finished 3rd (behind the Conservative Party) in 2000, and failed to field a candidate twice.

Instead of holding primaries, nominees for the special election were selected by the respective party leadership.  Democrat leadership selected Air Force Captain Bill Owens and Republican leadership selected very liberal State Assembly member Dierdre Scozzafava.  According to the American Conservative Union, Scozzafava has the third most liberal voting record in the New York assembly of either party.  She supports union “card check-off,” Obama’s so-called “simulus” bill, higher taxes, taxpayer funded abortion, gay marriage, and so on.  She has been endorsed by ACORN, DailyKOS founder Markos Moulitsas, and refused to say that she would even continue to run as a Republican in the 2010 election.

Unlike Massachusetts, New York has thriving 3rd parties because it allows for cross party endorsements.  An outraged Conservative party chose not to cross endorse the Republican selection and run Managing Partner of Dragon Benware Crowley & Co Doug Hoffman.  A recent Sienna poll shows a rapdily tightening race with all three candidates within 10% of each other.  The poll also shows Hoffman leading among independent voters.

While Scozzafava may have the letter (R) next to her name, virtually every pillar of the Reagan Revolution are now lining up behind Doug Hoffman.  Doug Hoffman is back by capitalist, free enterprise groups including the Club for Growth.

“After months of runaway spending, bailouts, and record deficits, the last thing we need in Congress is another rubber stamp for Nancy Pelosi and the liberal Democrats,” said Club President Chris Chocola. “Doug Hoffman is the only candidate in this race who will stand up for taxpayers and fight to protect our freedoms in Washington.”

The Club for Growth has just launched a $300,000 television ad campaign for Doug Hoffman.  I have included the video, and a poll, below the fold.

Doug Hoffman has the support of movement conservative groups including the American Conservative Union.

The GOP candidate, NY Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, “stands for higher taxes, bigger government, anti-family policies and just about everything that Republican voters oppose. The fact that she was ranked as the third most liberal member of the entire, very liberal, New York State Assembly says it all, ” Keene said. Keene said that on many issues Scozzafava would, if elected, vote with Nancy Pelosi.  “We don’t need Pelosi-lite in Washington.”

Doug Hoff man has the support of social conservative groups including the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List and the National Organization for Marriage

“The Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund is proud to endorse Doug Hoffman for Congress,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund. “He will be a passionate advocate for women and the unborn who will reflect the growing pro-life views of his district and the country. As we face the greatest threat since Roe v. Wade, abortion mandates in health care reform, Congress needs Doug’s pro-life leadership.”

Doug Hoffman has many other endorsements as well including Fred Thompson, the Police Benevolent Association, Concerned Women, Citizens of the Republic, Citizens United Political Victory Fund, Campaign for Working Families, NYS Right to Life PAC, GING-PAC, Conservative Victory Fund, Eagle Forum,, Nat’l Organization for Marriage, America’s Independent Party, Steve Forbes, Sarah Palin, Wholesaler-Distributor Political Action Committee, Freedoms Defense Fund and so on.
