Mass. town eyed for Guantanamo detainees if freed

October 20, 2009

+ AMHERST, Mass.-Amherst leaders are backing a resolution offering the Massachusetts college town as a possible resettlement home for two Guantanamo detainees if they are released from the military prison.

The board voted 2-1 on Monday to endorse a warrant article filed on behalf of the two men by the group Pioneer Valley No More Guantanamos. The resolution would require approval from Town Meeting. It also calls on Congress to lift a ban on relocating former Guantanamo prisoners — even those cleared of wrongdoing — from resettling in the U.S.

Supporters of Ahmed Belbacha and Ravil Mingazov say the men have been wrongly detained and never committed hostile attacks against the U.S.

Select Board chairwoman Stephanie O’Keeffe voted against the resolution, saying it was outside the expertise of Town Meeting.

Some of the better comments:

Sweet, scholarships for terrorists at UMASS Hope and Change

Maybe they will be given a full ride to Amherst College. Or be guest speakers.

Great. Two more Democrats in Massachusetts.

Not surprising. Hamas was and probably still is a registered student organization at UMASS Amherst.

I’ve had it! I’m outta here! With people like this living in America, our country will be less safe, so I figure since these people are advocating moving terrorists into our neighborhoods, I’m going to move to Gitmo – it’s obviously going to be safer there than living here!

Is that a pledge pin on your head wrap?

Just give their addresses to a few fraternities out there…it will be worse than Gitmo

Who’s going to give these people jobs? That Gitmo thing will look great on their resumes. Two more people for us tax payers to support!

Expect a rash of IED’s in the Amherst area if this happens. Of course, The Globe will not be able to pin down the cause.

  • But realistically what is the chance the RTM will approve this?  And the citation says ‘released’, but under what circumstances?  And what say if any does the state have in any of this?

As to the last comment….of course the Globe will know the cause…it will be right-wingers silly 🙂

  • I will at least give them credit for putting their money where their mouth is.  Can’t call them NIMBY supporters of the cause…

And I agree, there is no way it passes at Town Meeting.

Was held, imprisoned, for five years. The American government then decided that he was no threat at all, that they had basically stolen five years of his life. He was cleared.

But guess what? Ahmed Bel Bacha is from Algeria. He’s got good reason to believe that he will be tortured by Islamists if he is returned, and has stated he would rather stay in Guantanamo than return to Algeria.

He’s got no home, he’s got nowhere to go. He’s got nothing.

That Americans are seeking to take Ahmed Bel Bacha into their community is an amazing example of basic humanity, something I wouldn’t expect many of these commenters to understand.

A man who poses no threat, according to the government of the United States of America. Not a terrorist. Not an inherently dangerous and evil person. A human being to whom some people are daring to show compassion.

  • On September 10, 2001 Amherst voted to take down the American flag from their town square.  Aherst is the most liberal town in the most liberal state in the country.  Cambridge has nothing on Amherst.

Obama campaigns for Deval Patrick, and Deval Patrick takes a couple terrorists off Obama’s hands.

These detainees, if they are cleared should be sent packing out of the country. Period.  Cleared detainee, yeah right.

These people are dangerous when are these liberal idiots going to understand that.
