Statistics 101..Old Drivers Edition

Today another elderly driver abruptly stopped the car simply because he/she hit something. This time it was a liquor store. Apparently a cashier was lucky to not have been hurt badly or killed. For those of you that took statistics in college or even HS and paid attention you have to conclude that if these types of accidents are occurring 3 and 4 times per week, it is not a statistical anomaly. In fact, what may be happening here is that the press is looking for these stories and guess what, they are easy to find becasue they have been occurring regularly for years. My theory here is that it is statistically impossible for this many accidents to all of a sudden start occurring as regularly as they have been happening. So who is to blame? My hope is that someone from the MSM decides to investigate my theory that these types of old folk accidents have been occurring regularly for years. People live longer and they are more often medicated behind the wheel. Here’s the troubling part of this problem if I am right. Where has the RMV been for all this time if in fact my theory is correct?

Woman, 83, smashes into Natick liquor store, injures cashier

An 83-year-old woman drove her car through the exit doors of a liquor store in Natick this morning, striking a counter inside and pinning a cashier, who fortunately suffered only minor injuries, authorities said.

“It was a matter of inches. No doubt about it,” said Natick Deputy Fire Chief Michael Slattery.
