The alarming thing to me is that while the overall goal is to insure everyone, a big part of the “sell” to the masses is that we must bring costs down. And this article seems to say that it may do just the opposite.
That the government enjoys an edge in purchasing doesn’t mean that the overall costs will fall. It’s precisely the opposite. The public plan will be so heavily subsidized that Americans will tend to over-consume expensive medical services just the way they do now under regular Medicare. Only this time, the number of patients will be almost three times larger.
This is one author’s analysis, and I’m sure we’ll see others that offer counter points as things progress. But one thing is for certain no matter what form the government plan takes and this is:
