Despite the Sales Tax Increase the Tolls are Coming?!?

Beleaguered Pike drivers could face a double whammy of tax and toll hikes as Beacon Hill leaders hinted yesterday a 25-percent sales tax hike still doesn’t address long-term transportation needs.

“It’s not going to be enough for really anything going forward,” said Senate President Therese Murray (D-Plymouth) of the sales tax hike when asked yesterday about transportation costs in the future.

State Rep. Joseph Wagner (D-Chicopee) also indicated the $275 million raised by the tax hike won’t address the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority’s needs very far into the future.

The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority board members, facing a $100 million deficit, approved a toll hike to kick in July 1 if lawmakers haven’t approved another source of revenue.…
