2009 Massachusetts Employee Payroll

A while back, I wrote about those “poor starving teachers” at UMass.  Sure enough, when you sort by 2008 actual earnings, the top 85 state employees all work for the University.  #1 on the list is Ass. Dean Derek R Lovley who took $613,065.44 from the public coffers.

It is also important to note the difference between the “Annual Rate” of so many state employees and what they actually took home.  For example, the case of Ass. Professor Farajallah Habib whose annual rate is $60,586.80.  Upon first glance, that looks very reasonable for someone with that title.  However, he actually made $425,743.96.  Just imagine what he’ll make when he becomes a full professor.  His situation is not an anomaly.

I would guess that he gets this money from some other capacity, perhaps a bonus for fund raising or bringing research grant money to the University.  I don’t know.  I do know the left is trying to eliminate bonuses in the private sector from those “evil, greedy” people.  In government, Democrats have no problem giving people 7 times their salary while running up the highest per capita debt in the nation and raising taxes.

62 UMass employees made over $250,000.00 in 2008.  Obama calls them the weathy elite.  Will the Democrats take his advice and spread that wealth back to the struggling Massachusetts families who pay those salaries?  I doubt it.  Deval’s tax hikes are all regressive ones that hit lower income residents more.  Gas, Food, tolls.  These taxes hit people for the same dollar amount weather they make $30,000 or $613,065.44.

In 2008:

  • 5,980 employees took home more than $100,000.00
  • 70 people were employed directly by the Governor's office.  Most are staff assistants.
  • The lottery commission employed 431 people.  Treasurer Tim has endorsed a lottery privatization plan.
  • The State House employed 723 people.  It has 160 Representatives.
