GOP State Committeewoman Jennifer Nassour won her bid last night (1-27-09) to become the new chair of the Massachusetts Republican Party. The results were as follows:
Jennifer Nassour (49) – Joe Manzoli (15) – Mike Franco (2)
Over 200 people (including 66 members of the Republican State Committee) crammed the standing-room-only conference room in order to witness the election. National GOP committeepersons Jody Dow & Ron Kaufman were in attendance as were Beacon Hill GOP minority leaders Brad Jones & Richard Tisei. Also making an appearance were Republican legislators Jay Barrows, Scott Brown, Lew Evangelidis, Paul Frost, Betty Poirier, Karyn Polito, & Richard Ross. Activists from across the state watched as Nassour, Joe Manzoli, & Mike Franco gave their respective five minute pitches to the state committee members.
Prior to the meeting, all three candidates worked the crowd. You could feel the energy in the air. Some people were seen wearing either “Nassour” or “I Support Franco” name tags. Manzoli had half a dozen supporters holding signs for him outside of the hotel’s front lobby (& as an added touch, “Manzoli for Chair” signs were planted on snowbanks alongside the winding private driveway leading up to the Holiday Inn).
It was probably one of the best state committee meetings I’ve attended in a long time. Many party insiders were in awe at the turnout of activists. A few of them expressed the hope that the surge of visitors reflected a renewed sense of purpose & optimism within the party’s grassroots. One can hope such is the case. A lot of work remains to be done. In the meantime, though, last night was a great night to be a Republican.
