This is why wiretapping with no oversight is an awful, awful idea.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, should have that right.

You don’t trust the government.

And not in a no-taxes libertarian kind of way. Government as an institution is necessary and extremely important.

But don’t trust the people in the government. Ever.

People who serve in government, from presidents to generals to grunts, can be just as corrupt as anyone.

So when you set up any government program (and this applies to businesses, nonprofits, whatever), here’s what you should do.

Assume every single person is as awful as they could possibly be, and add suitcase full of awful.

Have transparency coming out of government’s ears.
