Lowell Sun: Reports Financials of Senate Race

Update: Lowell Sun story now online.

Ogonowski, the Dracut farmer and retired Air National Guard lieutenant colonel who unsuccessfully challenged Rep. Niki Tsongas for Congress last fall, filed his first campaign finance report with the Federal Election Commission yesterday. His campaign reported hauling in more than $307,000 since January, and has $186,962 on hand to spend.

Though he estimates it might take close to $8 million to run a competitive campaign against Kerry, Ogonowski insists his campaign is just getting warmed up.

“I’m ecstatic. We’ve far exceeded my expectations. We’re just laying the infrastructure now. We’re going to build on that each quarter,” Ogonowski said.

Kerry, the four-term Massachusetts Senator and former Democratic presidential nominee, already has about $9.1 million in the bank. Ogonowski raised about $695,000 for his Congressional bid last fall, including about $170,000 in his first quarter of fundraising.

But before Ogonowski gets to a head-to-head contest with Kerry he’ll have to defeat Jeff Beatty, of Harwich. Beatty is a Cape Cod Republican with a lengthy resume of national security experience including time as an Army Delta Force officer and counter-terrorism agent with the CIA.

Beatty yesterday told The Sun his campaign would report before the end of the day that it had raised nearly $1 million since it began fundraising last year.

Beatty formed an exploratory committee last April, but said he did not start fundraising in earnest until the fall. He did not form an official campaign committee until February, making this his first official campaign finance filing.

Despite the large total, Beatty reported having only $85,000 cash on hand.

I just heard from a friend that the Lowell Sun is reporting the financials of the Republican Primary for U.S. Senate.

Highlights –

Ogonowski – Raised $310k – has $185k on hand.

Beatty – Raised around $1M – has $85k on hand.

That is a slower start than I imagined for Ogonowski but for 8 weeks that isn’t bad.

Where did Jeff’s other $915K go?

Updates as they become available online.
