Largely Mormon Utah staged a landslide victory for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney on Super Tuesday. Romney, also Mormon, took an unprecedented 90 percent of the vote from the state that serves as ground zero for the Mormon faith in the United States.
So I am going to sit here and wait for the pundits, and Romney, to condemn the Mormons for their blind faith to a member of their own church. Religion should not be an issue in the race for the White House and we know this because Romney made a huge speech about that very thing not long ago. In fact, Romney stated in his speech back in early December:
“I am an American running for president. I do not define my candidacy by my religion,” he said. “Let me assure you that no authorities of my church will ever exert influence on presidential decisions.”
Romney says he will not allow authorities of his church to exert influence, but in fact they seemingly already have. Clearly the Mormons in Utah rallied collectively and blindly behind Romney for the simple fact that he is a Mormon, this giving him a bunch of delegate votes. It’s okay for Mormons to rally behind a man because of his faith, but evangelical Christians shouldn’t do it for Mike Huckabee. Hmmm?
So I expect any minute now that Romney will get on television and tell his Mormon brothers and sisters that they should not have voted blindly for him and they should have given full consideration to all the candidates for office. You know, like he did with the evangelical Christians in that big deal speech of his.
Oh Yeah, I am sure Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh will poke their heads out of the sand soon enough and apologize for their snarky remarks about Huckabee’s faithful followers seeing that the Mormons did the same thing. A sound rebuke of the Mormon followers in Utah is certainly deserved at this point and I expect Hannity and Limbaugh to serve it up quickly. Perhaps Mike Huckabee will make one of those fancy-shmancy speeches like Mitt asking Mormons to overlook their faith and vote for him…..
Yup, any minute now………… They are probably typing away as we speak……You know, in an effort to be fair and balanced………any minute now……………..Oooppps, wait a minute, is that it now? Nope, just Deval Patrick recommending another new tax….Well, probably any minute now……….I will just wait right here………….
