I like former State Rep Pope, really I do. I’ve met her a number of times. That is why I am truly baffled by her joining with Marie Parente, and Thomas George to expand her pension with meal and travel allowances.
Former state Reps. Susan Pope, Thomas George and Marie Parente argued that payments for their expenses fit the definition of regular compensation and should be included in their retirement benefits. The requests would have increased each of their pension payments by thousands of dollars.
The lawmakers may appeal to a state board, and then could take their cases to the court system. The battle was fought successfully by former UMass President William Bulger, who last year won a five-figure boost in his annual $179,000 pension.
I hope Representative Pope reconsiders.
